- During his extended operational period with the Weapon X program numerous tissue and fluid samples were collected from Wolverine.
- Approximately twenty years ago the Weapon X program determined it had the capability to clone a new super soldier from these samples. Improper or inadequate storage technologies however had rendered all samples unusable save one, which had significant damage to its remaining genetic structure.
- First ten clones were created, labeled X-1 through X-10 test subjects. All ten were failures before birth.
- X-11 was created, genetic reconstruction was attempted in order to restore damaged DNA segments. Reconstruction resulted in failure.
- X-12 through 22 were created over the next three years, each attempt using more advanced, radical or unorthodox techniques to recreate the lost information, all resulted in failure.
- Doctor Sarah Kinney is recruited to resolve the situation and provide a fresh perspective. She correctly deduces that all damaged information is carried on the Y chromosone and possibly could be repaired by splicing in fresh genetic information along with replications from the undamage X chromosone. Worries that such genetic alteration would render the subject's X-Gene inert and thus useless as a soldier cause the plan to be rejected.
- Against orders Doctor Kinney completes her alterations and repairs, producing a viable sample. Weapon X does not destroy the material, but instead kidnaps Doctor Kinney and moves her to an ultra-black level secure facility and implants her with the resulting embryo, Doctor Kinney begins to suspect that her employers are not entirely legal.
- As predicted Sarah Kinney gives birth to a healthy baby girl.
- A comprehensive course of societal distancing, abuse and rewards is used to attempt to condition X-23 to not consider herself human. Doctor Kinney attempts to give the subject a human name, but is severely reprimanded. She manages to completely heal within three months and does not attempt to make the effort again.
- Extensive physical training is conducted, attempting to hone the subject into a killing tool. Leisure activity is studying weapons manuals, kill diagrams and philosophy of war.
- Age six: Subject successfully performs first kill.
- Age eight: Subject kills handler attempting to remove food tray before it is licked clean. Subject is reprimanded but manages to fully heal within three months.
- Age ten: Project is yielding minimal results, subject scores average to good on all physical aptitude tests. Subject is placed in behavior correction cubicle three and exposed to increasing doses of radiation over a 48 hour period, culminating in an hour long dose to lethal levels. After three days of lethargy, lesions begin to heal. On day four claws erupt from targets hands and surprisingly feet. Day five, subject has successfully regrown hair lost due to radiation poisoning and project funding is renewed, mutancy successfully triggered.
- Age thirteen: Subject's claws are deemed to have fully matured. Funding is limited so they are surgically removed and coated in adamantium before being reinserted. Outer claw right hand rejects twice and attempts to regenerate naturally, each times bone growths were surgically removed and the claw reset, successfully accepted the third time.
- Age fourteen: Subject psychologically conditioned to react extremely violently to a complex artificial pheromone chain. Violent reactions are rewarded while abuse, damage and fear responses are increased when exposed to said chain. Eventually an acceptable level of pavlovian reaction is reached.
- Age fifteen: Subject performs first successful paid contract, the target is a presidential candidate. Success is overwhelming. X-23 moved up to full rotation, assassinations scheduled as closely as possible, projections are project will recoup investment within six years.
- Due to the success of X-23 a new series of clones were designed. Entitled X-23 Beta through X-23 Omega, advances in cloning technology allowed them to be vat grown.
- Kinney upon discovering the truth about the new clones and having suffered enough abuse instructed X-23 to destroy the clones and the facility. Total losses were well over one billion dollars, including projected losses due to the escape of Doctor Kinney and X-23.
- Black Beta, data storage and emergency operations facility destroyed during conflict with X-23 as well. All project data lost.
- Retrieval teams Alpha-One, Beta-One and Delta-Three tracked X-23 and Doctor Kinney to the Xavier compound, X-23 incapacitated several individuals before making contact with Wolverine. Team attempted to intervene. All three teams were decimated, with survivors deemed unsalvageable. Kinney was killed in the conflict after being spray with X-23's trigger scent. Wolverine was incapacitated during the fight, X-23 fled the scene before he could recover.
- X-23 presumed to be operating in Northe-Eastern United States or neighboring Canadian regions. Collateral property concerns as well as budgetary and oversight concerns make recovery unfeasible at this time.
Quiet - X-23 has spent her life learning to not make noise. Making noise gets you noticed, being noticed means you'll be hurt. Even in situations when people like her to talk she is at best quiet, if not absolutely withdrawn. Communicating with others is a skill she has problems with.
Brooding - When one is quiet all the time one doesn't have much to do but sit with your own thoughts. As X-23's thoughts are often dark, filled with regrets and introspection on the evil deeds she's performed in the past. A dark complexion doesn't help matters, she simply often appears to be a brooding soul.
Angry - When a girl is hurt for doing poorly, hurt for doing badly, and rewarding for inflicting pain on others, the simple result is that she grows to enjoy violence, anger and other negative emotions. As X-23 grows, develops and gains friends these will be recognized as negative emotions, things to avoid, but the underlying feelings, the instinctive reactions will take a long time to overcome.
Antisocial - X-23 has never had a friend, or a parent, or an acquaintance. X-23 has had handlers, wranglers, managers, trainers that treated her like meat, a tool, a weapon. She isn't sure how to socialize, how to handle being around people. Most people she's met in her life she's killed, brutally and viciously. It's not that she dislikes people or doesn't want friends, she simply has no ability to interact with them.
HEALING FACTOR: X-23 shares Wolverine's amazing healing factor. Due to it she is able to heal any wound that doesn't outright kill her, even wounds that would normally prove to be mortal if they are not instantly so. Her healing factor also provides her with an enhanced constitution and purges her body of disease, toxins and foreign agents at an accelerated rate. It is theoretically possible that her body could even regenerate severed limbs or missing organs, though this would tax her abilities to their utmost. It is worth noting that while her ability is identical to that of Wolverine her body is not extensively laced with highly toxic adamantium, as her body doesn't constantly have to repair the effects of being exposed to this lethal material her healing factor consistently operates more efficiently and more quickly than Wolverine's would under similar circumstances.
ENHANCED SENSES: X-23's sense of hearing and smell are superhuman, exceeding even a bloodhound in sensitivity and acuity. She can track people by their scents more than an hour after they've passed, even in urban settings. She can distinguish the number of individuals in an adjoining room if she takes a few moments to concentrate on coordinating the number and types of different scents and sounds (the types and number of foot steps, perfumes, colognes, deodorants and different sweats, for example.)
MUSCLE DENSITY: Just like Wolverine, X-23 might be short, but she's scrappy. Her mutant nature causes her muscles and bones to form more densely than would be normal for a girl of her age. This allows her to exert great physical strength, though no superhuman, without appearing like a muscle bound mass.
CLAWS: X-23 naturally has two foot long claws running along each forearm, that can be extended from the back of her hand, as well as a single claw that runs along each Fibia that can be extended from her foot. In the past these claws have been removed from her body and encased in adamantium. This unbreakable substance has been formed so that each blade is as sharp as possible, easily cutting through most materials known to man. It is worth noting that to extend her foot claws she must extend her foot, pointing her toes down so that the claw can run along the natural track in her skeletal system to emerge safely, as she must straighten her hands in order to ensure the claw don't eject from her wrists.
HAND TO HAND COMBAT: Since childhood X-23 has been extensively trained in hand to hand combat techniques. There are at least three different martial arts styles where she could hold the rank of eighth or ninth Dan, if she were formally trained, and many others where she would be considered a competent practitioner. Her primary training is in brutal, conclusive combat, strikes and blows intended to permanently injure, maim, or cripple an opponent if not outright kill them. Her short stature also ensures she was extensively trained in avoidance of blows, breaking grapples and stopping people from using their superior reach and weight to toss her around in combat.
BLADED COMBAT: Even before the expression of her claws, X-23 was proficient in bladed combat. Knives and other small blades are simple and easy to conceal, but can kill as effectively as a gun if used properly. Since her mutant powers manifested her primary focus of training has been on the use of her claws, including long sweeping kicks where she extends her foot claw at the edge of the arc to gain an unexpected foot of reach.
ASSASSIN: As part of her training as an assassin, X-23 has had training in a number of applicable and useful skills. She knows how to bypass a large number of security systems, both practical and electronic; how to pick a lock; how to force entry without making much noise and how to determine the best possible means of ingress into a building.
FIREARMS: X-23 can use a variety of firearms proficiently. Initial training was with handguns, later learning how to properly sight and adjust rifles for long range shots. She can comfortably handle, disassemble and maintain most modern firearms.
DEMOLITIONS: As part of her training as an assassin X-23 was instructed in the use and construction of explosive devices. She is able to handle not only military and commercial compounds and triggers, but also has some knowledge in 'home brew' and improvised devices made out of readily available ingredients.
REACTIVE COMBATANT: A lifetime of abuse, ambushes and combat have honed X-23's senses. She no longer has to conciously react to a dangerous situation. If in a fight or even just walking down the street-if a person attempts to attack her-muscle memory and reflexes often attend to the situation before she can think about it. In fact to explain how a fight progressed after the fact X-23 would have to go back and try to analyze it herself, as more often than not concious choice doesn't enter into her combat style. While this means she reacts with superior speed to any danger it also means that she has to very carefully retrain herself now to not automatically extend her claws and kill to end a fight quickly. Of course against more dangerous opponents or when the fighting has a slower tempo she has more concious control over her choices in combat, it is easy for her however to react instinctively and lethally in combat.
MUTANT: Though her mutant heritage grants her extraordinary abilities it is also a source of many troubles. As a mutant X-23 is part of a specific subset of metahumans that are stigmatized and feared by most people. In addition her status allows her to be tracked by systems that can identify the X-Gene, such as Cerebro or certain other mutants. Also some specific pathogens or powers may be able to specifically neutralize mutant abilities or even injure or kill based on her X-gene.
CLONE: X-23 is a clone, a fact that can be discerned by any skilled geneticist or exceptional physician with the proper equipment. In addition to any social stigma that might arrise from this there remains the possibility that there were unknown problems or complications from the cloning proccess that might arrise in the future, as well as a variety of poisons, pathogens or abilities that might specifically affected her artificially constructed genetic structure.
NO IDENTITY: As a clone created by a rogue black ops group, X-23 has no civilian identity. She is a non entity in the world and thus can't apply for a driver's license, get a bank account, or hold a legal job as she has no paperwork to identify her as a legal citizen.
HUNTED: During her escape and Weapon X's subsequent pursuit, X-23 proved to be a formidable opponent. Though the group lost multiple operatives and millions of dollars in equipment trying to recapture her they haven't given up. At this point Weapon X has lost track of X-23's specific location, and are less likely to attempt to attack her directly; they are however keen to reacquire their investment and will go to considerable lengths to do so.
TRIGGER SCENT: The artificial pheromone mixture known as trigger scent was devised by Weapon X as a means of control over X-23. She is conditioned psychologically and physiologically to enter a mindless beserker state, attacking any creature that has been sprayed by the scent. The ability to formulate this particular scent has been thought to have been lost with the destruction of X-23's training facility. There exists the chance that knowledge of its formulation survived, and Weapon X is certainly attempting to reinvent it or a derivative, which could have entirely unexpected effects when X-23 is exposed to it.
SENSITIVE HEARING: Due to her heightened hearing X-23 is especially vulnerable to sonic attacks. Any device or ability that generates a high frequency sonic pulse designed to damage or incapacitate people works even more effectively on X-23. Thankfully her healing factor prevents such attacks from ever doing lasting damage and means she can recover quickly, but they are especially debilitating as they occur.
