Character Details

A faithful, though much-maligned member of the Brotherhood of Mutants. Mortimer Toynbee was saved from an angry mob by Magneto. Unfortunately for Magneto, this was the first nice thing anyone had ever done for Mortimer. Consequently, he became very clingy and subservient. Mortimer has abandoned his birth name and now answers only to Toad. He serves as the Brotherhood's comic relief, even though he's not especially funny.

Inferiority Complex: Toad has been told his entire life that he's ugly and disgusting. Both of those things are true, and this has left him with no self-esteem to speak of. He always expects poor treatment from others, and he always believes that he deserves it. He finds himself just as grotesque as everybody else does, and it is only with a great deal of effort, and some self-medication, that he is able to cope with his existence.

Subservient: Toad will put up with a lot in order to endear himself to someone. He'll jump through hoops for just a kind word.

Clingy: If given any encouragement, Toad will attach himself to anyone who treats him with even the slightest bit of kindness. He'll follow them around, making himself as helpful as possible and generally annoying whoever is unfortunate enough to find themselves on the receiving end of Toad's favor.

Sarcastic: Sarcasm has been called the lowest form of wit. That seems especially true when observing Toad attempting to converse. He has a bitter outlook on life, and this is reflected in the way that he talks and relates to people. Most of his more biting comments are mumbled under his breath to keep from offending people (an absolute necessity when one considers the powers and temperaments of the people he associates with). But even though most of his observations go unheard, he still makes them.

Cruel: True, Toad has played the victim most of his life. When given the chance, however, he is capable of quite a bit of cruelty. He tends to be especially cruel to normal humans, or people who are better-looking than he is. So, almost everybody.

Obnoxious: Trying to pin down exactly what it is about Toad that annoys people so much would be a difficult ordeal. Aside from the obvious, there is something about him that just rubs people the wrong way. It isn't just that he's ugly and smelly, although that is probably reason enough for nobody to want him around. What really tends to get on peoples' nerves is the way he carries himself, and the toady way he treats everyone. It's almost as if he begs to get walked on.

Unhygienic: Lifelong habits are almost impossible to break. Toad has a lifelong habit of not bathing or grooming himself. The fact that he has sensitive skin provides even more motivation for him to avoid soap. His reluctance to bathe, combined with his overactive glands, makes Toad very foul-smelling most of the time.

Bully: Toad relishes power. He is used to being the low man on the totem pole, and the least dangerous person in the room. So when he's around people weaker than him, he makes the most of the time by treating them as poorly as possible. Put him in a room full of normal humans and he will usually torment them to some degree. He also likes to lord authority over people. The extent of his authority is never very great, but he always gets a kick out of being in charge of something, no matter how trivial.

Mutant Supremacist: Toad has been completely won over to the idea of mutant supremacy. He has come to see humans as inferior beings. This is an especially attractive worldview to someone who was teased mercilessly and treated more like a thing than a person. Any time he's able to hurt normal people he feels as though a bit of his childhood has been vindicated.

Lazy: If given the choice, Toad would prefer to recline in front of the television all day and waste his entire life away. He doesn't like to work, he doesn't like to train, and he definitely doesn't like to work up a sweat. However, he is slowly warming up to the idea as he's begun to see some rewards to being active and productive.

Cowardly: When up against superior forces, Toad will almost always try to retreat. Although his life is basically worthless, it's all he has.

PREHENSILE TONGUE: Toad's tongue is about five feet long in its normal state. Most of its length is stored in a special section of his throat, leaving a relatively small segment in his mouth for things like talking and manipulating food. Powerful muscles in his throat and lower jaw are able to expel his tongue from his mouth at roughly 50 g-forces. This causes his tongue to stretch to a little over thirteen feet in length. The tip of his tongue is covered in a sticky surface that is able to adhere to almost anything. This enables him to catch small objects (like birds) from thirteen feet away and then snap them back into his mouth in only a fraction of a second. Alternatively, he is able to use his tongue like a whip, wrapping it around an object. The muscles in his tongue are incredibly strong, making it impossible for a human of normal strength to free themselves from his tongue by simply trying to struggle free. The muscles are so strong that he is able to lift 400 pounds over his head with his tongue fully extended. He can lift more weight with his tongue if it is at less than its full length.

Additionally, Toad can use his tongue to scale objects, or to traverse distances quickly. He can attach himself to the back of a quickly departing vehicle, and hang on for the ride

HYPER LEAPING: Toad's great leg strength allows him to leap over fifteen feet into the air and at least thirty feet horizontally.

SLIME SPITTING: Toad produces a sticky, mildly corrosive slime that he is able to project from his mouth at very high speeds. Once it makes contact with the air, the slime starts to thicken and quickly turns to a very strong glue. Its corrosive quality is about on the same level as stomach acid. One would have to leave it on their skin for several hours before any real tissue damage started to happen. What makes it most useful as a weapon is its binding quality. If Toad is able to get it on someone's hands their fingers will most likely be glued together, reducing their effectiveness. Also, getting slimed in the face can greatly impair a person, possibly sealing up their eyes, nose or mouth temporarily. Being biological, the slime degrades almost entirely within a few days. It can be removed with certain cleaning chemicals, or with sharp objects or blunt force after it has hardened.

STRENGTH: Toad is much stronger than a baseline human. He is able to lift over five hundred pounds with his upper body. His real strength, however, is in his legs. He can leg press over a thousand pounds. It is this leg strength, combined with his naturally elastic tendons, that enables him to jump so high. He could also kick through solid concrete, if only his feet were tougher.

FLEXIBILITY: Toad is capable of contorting his body in ways that look excruciatingly painful. His spine is especially flexible, and he is able to crouch all day without suffering any damage to his spinal column, or even any discomfort. Because of his unique physiology, he finds crouching more comfortable, but he can stand up straight when he wants to.

STICKING: Toad's hands and feet have special pads on them that enable him to cling to most surfaces. This makes crawling walls very easy, and also enables him to hang on to slippery objects with ease.

COMBAT: Toad doesn't have very much in the way of traditional combat training. He tends to just spaz out and use his physical attributes to get the upper hand. This works out for him about as often as not, as his natural abilities lend themselves well to hand-to-hand combat. His natural acrobatics and his ability to kick a person's head clean off give him a not inconsiderable advantage in most of the fights that he gets into. Since joining the Brotherhood he has been trained a bit in the theory behind several different forms of martial arts, but he still has a long way to go before he actually masters a real martial art form. So for the time being he'll just have to keep hopping around and trying to confuse his opponents.

CRIME: Ever since he was a teenager, Toad has been engaging in petty forms of crookery in order to support himself. His favorite method of theft is usually purse or wallet-snatching, but he has been known to break into the occasional house or threaten someone at gunpoint. However, none of these things really require any great amount of skill.

TUMBLING: Toad is able to fall from great heights without sustaining any injury. This is fortunate since his main mutant ability involves leaping to great heights.

VEHICLES: Toad has basic familiarity with most kinds of vehicles, and makes a competent wheelman for a variety of the Brotherhood's missions.

ACROBATICS: With his natural gifts, it doesn't take much skill on Toad's part to be able to perform lots of seemingly impossible acrobatic maneuvers. However, he's been practicing using his gifts since he was a teenager, and has started much more strenuous training since being inducted into the Brotherhood. This additional training has helped him to get somewhere in the top tier of acrobats worldwide.

TECHNOLOGY: Toad is far from a computer whiz, but he is able to operate most common modern technological appliances with at least an average amount of proficiency. He can set up his DVR to record Gossip Girl, or send an email with various files attached to it. In addition, he is capable of assembling pretty much anything, so long as it comes with instructions.

TOAD: Toad's appearance is basically impossible to disguise. He is quickly identified as a mutant anywhere he goes, which is a real pain in the current anti-mutant social climate. In addition, most people don't find toads attractive. His appearance freaks people out, and turns people off.

OBNOXIOUS: For a variety of reasons, being around Toad is always a terrible ordeal for almost everyone. He seems to have a knack for annoying people. His personality is extremely grating, which often results in his getting harmed physically by his more powerful compatriots.

INEPT: If you want something done right, send anyone in the world other than Toad to do it. Toad is a seemingly incurable screwup. He is usually able to complete only the most basic of tasks with any degree of success. However, he seems to be making gradual strides towards competence. More like baby steps, but maybe there's hope for him.

COWARD: Given the choice between self-preservation and taking one for the team, Toad will always choose the former. He hates to be put in situations where there is any risk to him, and will almost always retreat from an opponent that he percieves as more formidable than him, whether his perception is true or not. His cowardice extends to the social sphere as well. He isn't likely to voice an opinion that isn't shared by the majority, and he always tries to avoid saying things that would incur someone's wrath. Unfortunately for him, his inability to take a stand annoys people far more than occasionally offending them would.

EDUCATION: Although Toad is smarter than he seems, he never got much in the way of traditional education. He spent most of his time in school getting bullied, and he dropped out of school completely when he was thirteen. There is a lot that most people take for granted that Toad is completely in the dark about. He probably won't win a game show anytime soon.

HYGIENE: Toad has never had much use for bathing or grooming. Why this would be a flaw is pretty self-evident.
