Character Details
- Her origins are hazy. The only common details include: radiation, spider DNA, that her parents were scientists, and that she was raised on Wundagore Mountain. She remembers little, though her nanny Bova seems to be a constant. Was she comatose? She doesn't know and HYDRA won't say. She'd ask her parents — Jonathan and Mirriem Drew — but their mysterious disappearance merely complicates things.
- She was picked up by HYDRA courtesy of Otto Vermis, brainwashed, and summarily turned into an agent. She was trained extensively, her greatest mentor being Taskmaster. During this time, she was known as Arachne.
- Time passes. She's eventually called in for her first — and last — HYDRA mission: to assassinate Nick Fury. He changed her mind about what HYDRA was and she wound up killing Vermis instead. Just before dying, Vermis managed, somehow, to convince her she was an evolved spider.
- Wandering around in Europe landed her in London. Once there, she encountered Ben Grimm and Modred the Magician. Modred was able to show her the true nature of her origin — all that science-y mumbo-jumbo and all; that she wasn't really an evolved spider — and she hung around for a while. Eventually, she met Magnus, who encouraged her to move to the States.
- She, Magnus, and Jerry Hunt (a SHIELD agent) wound up in LA. She settled there and took up the Spider-Woman identity. She also sets out to find out what really happened to her father. In the process, she inadvertently angers Morgan Le Fey by thwarting her efforts to get the Darkhold. She also wound up working as a secretary for the Harko Institute, which granted her access to the treatment she needed for her pheromones. Wound up unemployed after her fight with Nekra.
- Eventually, she parts ways with Magnus and Jerry. She picks up a friend in the form of Lindsay McCabe. She turns bounty hunter after flirting with the idea of being a thief. When Lindsay asks her to move in as her roommate in San Francisco, she agrees.
- Some measure of success is had in the City by the Bay. She started up a private investigation service and did work on the side as Spider-Woman. She would become known as the 'dark angel of San Francisco' during this time. She made friends, she made enemies, and she probably made some frenemies, too. She fought Viper, who tried to convince her that she was her mother — Jessica's still not sure what to make of that. But, all good things must come to an end and part of that end included an offer she couldn't refuse from her old pal Magnus.
- In retrospect, going on a spiritual time-travel jaunt to defeat Morgan Le Fey probably wasn't a wise thing. She did it anyway. Craziness happened, she wound up dead, and Magnus cast a spell that would make people forget her.
- It failed. She was found, revived, and wound up completely powerless as a result. Magnus' astral form was destroyed. She continued her work and her powers eventually started to return. She did a lot of work in Madripoor and assisted the X-men from time to time.
- No sooner than her powers returned than Charlotte Witter stole them. She wound up working with Madame Webb to train up a young woman to eventually take the role of Spider-Woman. While Jessica's powers began to return (again), she mentored Mattie until she wound up missing. Jessica crossed paths with Jessica Jones in the process of finding the girl. Eventually, Mattie was rescued and cleaned up.
- Seeking a more permanent solution to her fluctuating powers, she wound up taking an offer from HYDRA toward that end. HYDRA wanted her to join SHIELD so she could garner information from them; after a chat with Nick Fury, she joins SHIELD and proceeds to play the role of double-agent. SHIELD feeds her limited information to pass to HYDRA and she passes HYDRA-related information to SHIELD. It's a win-win all around until Nick goes missing for a while.
- Eighteen months later and she not only has her powers, but they're better than before. Current times see her as being somewhat adrift. Stuck with grunt work at SHIELD despite her rank and with HYDRA having no immediate use for her as a result, she's taken up the role of Spider-Woman a bit more actively in the hopes that it'll keep her distracted.
