Character Details
—Nicholas Joseph Fury was born in Hell's Kitchen, New York on April 14, 1910 to Jack and Katherine Fury. He was the eldest of three children (Brother Jake, Sister Dawn).
—After America joined in WW I, Nick's father re-enlisted with the U.S. Air Force, and made a name for himself as a fighter pilot. From a very early age, Jack was a great inspiration to his young son.
—As Nick grows on the rough and tumble streets on New York, he learns quickly how to fend for himself. He takes up boxing and marksmanship with the Police Athletic League.
—Around the age of 16, Nick drops out of school to seek out a life of excitement and adventure with his childhood friend Red Hargrove. The pair circumvent the globe taking odd jobs and finally becoming a pair of daredevils with a wing-walking and parachute act.
—It's in the act that they are discovered by Lieutenant Samuel Happy Sam Sawyer. Sawyer convinces the duo to join the Army and put their heroics to good use defending their country.
—Nick and Red work their ways through the ranks, treating the rise as a little competition. On December4 7, 1941 Nick and Red are both station at Schofield Barracks in Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attack. Red is one of the many brave soldiers to loose his life in the devastating attack. Nick vows vengence against both the Japanese and the Nazis.
—Sawyer, who was now a Captain, assigned Nick is own squad of commandos to command. The group victoriously performed numerous missions and gained a reputation for their efficiency and ferocity in everything they did. They were also given the nickname The Howling Commandos based on a fearsome howl they would unleash as they went into battle as a way of tricking their opponents into believing they had greater numbers.
—It is during WWII that Fury first comes to blows with Baron Von Strucker, who would go on to form HYDRA, and be a constant thorn in Nick's side.
—While fighting in the European Theatre near the end of the war Nick is seriously injured by a mine. It's feared that he would be unable to pull through his injuries and make it back home.
—A doctor named Berthold Sternberg sees Fury as a perfect opportunity to test his new Infinity Formula. The formula saves Nick's life, but the damage to his left eye is too extensive and he slowly begins to loose all sight in it.
—Returning home to New York, Fury is initiated into the OSS (Office of Strategic Services, the precursor to the CIA) as a covert officer.
—Six months after returning home, Nick is contacted by Dr. Sternberg. Sternberg informs Nick that the Infinity Formula has retarded his natural aging process. However, Nick must receive annual injections of the formula, or he will rapidly age and die. Sternberg offers to supply Nick with the annual doses, so long as Nick continues to send him large sums of money each year.
—Making a name for himself in the OSS, Fury is promoted to the rank of Colonel when the he transfers to the CIA after the OSS is disbanded. He is reassigned eventually from covert operations to a liaison of sorts between super powered groups and individuals when they begin to reappear.
—Tony Stark recruits Fury to be the second commander of SHIELD. Shortly after his taking command of the organization, they become locked in an extended conflict with an international terrorist organization known as HYDRA.
—Under Fury's command, SHIELD becomes one of the most powerful organizations on Earth, amassing a great wealth of technology, and developing covert alliances with national governments and superhero groups such as the Avengers. H eventually becomes the defacto point of contact between supers and governments when vital information is needed to prevent a crisis.
—Fury is sure to keep SHIELD separate from any one government, allowing them freedom in their actions and a level of deniability to the governments he worked with.
—The use of LMDs (or Life Model Decoys) by SHIELD to impersonate VIPs for various causes bites them in the backside. After years of commanding the elite organization, it comes to Fury's attention that many of HYDRA and his own agency have been replaced by these androids.
—Feeling betrayed, Fury separates himself from SHIELD, and finds himself hunted by the agents who once served under his command, many of whom turned out to be LMDs themselves.
—Using the skills he learned as a covert officer in the CIA, Fury is able to reveal the threat of the LMDs, and put a stop to them. The whole ordeal, however left SHIELD severely undermanned, and falling apart at the seams.
—Fury vows to start from scratch and rebuild the organization, making it the powerhouse it once was.
