Character Details
A billionaire scientist with very few morals, Norman Osborn cobbled together a formula to make a person… better. The formula exploded in his face, and ramped up all of his physical and mental attributes. Unfortunately, it also ramped up his mental instability. He began suffering from nervous breakdowns and bouts of amnesia, during which he became another person entirely: the Green Goblin he had nightmares about as a child.
The Green Goblin frequently clashed with Spider-Man for several years, gradually developing from a from a wacky bank robber to something much more lethal. After causing the death of Spider-Man's girlfriend, the Green Goblin was impaled on his own glider.
Norman woke up in a morgue, and found himself dressed in tattered Green Goblin attire with a gaping wound in his chest. He has since managed to partially reconcile his two personalities. For a time he allowed his enemies to believe that he was dead, while he watched and plotted from the shadows. Now, Norman is back in the public eye. He has retaken the corporation that he built and is working actively to acquire more power, and kill his long time nemesis Spider-Man.
Dual Identity: Ever since the laboratory accident that gave him his powers, Norman's mind has been split into two distinct personalities. For several years his normal personality was unaware of his Green Goblin personality, and only gradually began to suspect that he might be off his rocker. Occasionally he would experience auditory and visual hallucinations. Specifically he would hear someone talking to him and on rare occasions he would even see a twisted green face when he closed his eyes. However, since his resurrection he has been aware of his other side and has begun to come to terms with it (although the hallucinations have certainly not stopped). Letting the Goblin out every now and then allows him to keep the two personalities somewhat balanced.
Green Goblin: The Green Goblin persona is pretty close to being completely evil. It thrives on causing pain and blowing stuff up. This side of Norman is fiercely protective of Norman and his interests. The Green Goblin sees himself almost as a babysitter for Norman. He has the stomach to do all of the things that Norman won't. Because of the Green Goblin's excessive cruelty, Norman has to attempt to keep this aspect of her personality repressed as much as possible. However, the longer he keeps the Goblin side repressed, the more violently the Goblin struggles to overtake the Norman side and break free.
Manipulative: Norman sees everyone as a commodity to either be utilized or traded. He uses every situation in order to further his goals, and if it means sacrificing someone else, he feels no guilt whatsoever in doing so. He is actually quite adept at pitting people against each other and can often get people to do what he wants without them ever knowing that he was behind their actions all along.
Proud: Even when Norman was sure that he was going insane, his pride kept him from admitting to anyone that he was having difficulties. Norman has been megalomaniacal since childhood, but his exposure to the Goblin Formula has exacerbated this tendency. He thinks that he is better than everyone, and tends to treat other people as worthless. In addition to damaging his relationships with others, this trait also causes him to be very overconfident. He would have much more success if he didn't underestimate his opponents so often.
Paranoid: The stress of keeping his dual identity secret and running a corporation have made Norman see enemies everywhere. Granted, there are plenty of law enforcement agencies and superheroic do-gooder types trying to find the identity of the Green Goblin, not to mention a certain wall-crawler. Still, Norman is unable to trust anyone, and is suspicious of anyone who shows even passing interest in his work or in his extra-curricular activities.
Sadistic: Norman's basic personality is cruel and vindictive. The Goblin personality, however, is well beyond sociopathic. Norman doesn't typically engage in cruelty simply for cruelty's sake. He tends instead to use cruel methods in order to get his way. But the Goblin only wants to hurt as many people as possible. Usually the two personalities can find a happy middle between productivity and unnecessary slaughter, but when the Green Goblin is fully in control all bets are off. But even during Norman's comparitively lucid periods he still takes a certain amount of joy in things that the non-crazy portion of humanity would consider sick.
Leader: You don't get to run a multi-billion dollar corporation without having really good management skills. Norman has a very take-charge personality and is able to command a certain amount of respect, especially from the people who receive their paychecks from him. Part of what makes people willing to follow him is his supreme confidence. He never doubts himself, even when he should. But what really makes him so good at getting results from people is his ability to motivate them. He always offers great incentives for the go-getters in his employ, while those who don't perform are quickly replaced with those who can.
Obsessive: For whatever reason, Norman simply can't let leave well enough alone. Once he gets an idea, no matter how crazy it is, he won't rest until he sees it through.
Vindictive: Norman can hold a grudge for at least forty-three years. Anyone who crosses him will probably die from old age (if they're lucky) before they're forgiven, no matter how minor the infraction.
Power-Hungry: Even though he's got way more money than he could ever need and controls the lives of thousands of he employees, Norman still doesn't have enough power. He spends a great deal of his time plotting new ways to increase his influence. Nearly every move he makes is motivated by the acquisition of power. Anything that might seem charitable is merely to help curry public favor. Norman will do whatever it takes to increase his company's profit margins, but he has started to look for other ways to gain power since his resurrection. The corporate arena has become a bit too small for him, and he is looking to spread his influence to new spheres.
Self-Righteous: Like most villains, Norman honestly believes several things. First: He is superior to others and therefore has a superior morality. Second: The evil things that he is doing are justified because his motives are beyond question. And third: History will judge him as a great man. Norman honestly wants to make the world a better place, he just thinks that the world would be a better place if it were remade in his image.
Unstable: The mental problems that Norman has are way beyond conventional psychiatry's ability to diagnose, let alone cure. He can function well enough in society and is able to run his business and criminal enterprises well enough. He's even able to have periods of extreme productivity where it seems like there's nothing that he can't do. But he also has psychotic breakdowns on an epic scale, throws violent (often deadly) tantrums, and can spend weeks in secluded depression where he does nothing but curse his enemies and his fate. He tries hard to maintain some semblance of balance but this is impossible for a deranged loon who's too proud to seek help. On top of that, he seems to be at his most brilliant when he's at his most unstable. Most of his major successes come right before a major breakdown.
INTELLIGENCE: Before his transformation Norman was already a gifted intellectual. Since becoming the Green Goblin his intelligence has reached a level that can not be measured by modern tests. He is capable of solving complicated problems that seem unsolvable and creating technologies that seem like the stuff of science fiction.
STRENGTH: Norman is capable of lifting nine tons.
REACTION: With the enhancement to his mind, Norman's reaction times have been greatly reduced. His reflexes are beyond peak human, and he is able to react to threats faster than humanly possible. It is his fast reflexes that enable him to pilot the Goblin Glider without immediately dying.
DURABILITY: He's not tough enough to deflect bullets, but Norman is much more durable than an unenhanced human. He holds up well under blunt trauma (such as repeated punches from Spider-Man). Depending on where he is hit a fist has to have about eight tons of force behind it in order to do any damage to him. Anything sharp enough, such as a bullet or knife, can go right through his skin. He is, however, tougher to cut than a normal human.
AGILITY: He's not a contortionist by any means, but Norman is extremely flexible. His ability to move in strange ways and hold odd-looking poses is what enables him to balance on top of his rocket skateboard. Also very handy for dodging bursts of webbing.
REGENERATION: Like nearly every super-powered person these days, Norman has a regenerative ability beyond that of a normal human. He doesn't heal as quickly as a lot of regenerators, but he has been able to come back from the dead within a few hours of being fatally injured.
STAMINA: A side-effect of his other physical enhancements, Norman's body no longer produces as many fatigue poisons. He can maintain strenuous activity for many hours before he becoms tired. That's especially impressive when one considers that Norman's idea of 'strenuous' is much more extreme than even the best-conditioned athlete's.
SPEED: With his enhanced strength and reaction time, Norman is able to physically move faster than regular people. His movement speed is somewhat less than twice that of a normal person.
GLIDER: Norman has used several gliders over the course of his costumed career. The current Goblin Glider is capable of sustained flight approaching the speed of sound. The glider can only reach its fastest speeds when there is no rider, both because the excess weight slows it down and because anyone riding on the glider would probably be torn off at those speeds. When operated by a skilled rider, the Goblin Glider is a very quick and nimble mode of trasportation. It is capable of carrying the weight of three average-sized people for short distances without excessive loss of agility. The glider is wirelessly tethered to a remote control inside the Green Goblin's mask, allowing the Goblin to give the glider basic, preprogrammed commands with his mind.
The glider is capable of carrying a complement of six rockets. The rockets have varying capabilities due to Norman's constant tinkering, but they are usually heat-seeking and capable of destroying even heavily-reinforced structures.
GOBLIN SUIT: Preferring to keep his equipment as light as possible, the Green Goblin's suit is unarmored. It provides very little protection from physical trauma. However, it is ideally suited for the type of use for which it was intended. The Goblin Suit consists of a base layer of form-fitting, skin-like material. Unlike skin though, the material is able to resist winds at the high velocities that the Goblin Glider is capable of attaining. It is not quite frictionless, but it is slippery enough to cut wind resistance significantly. Also, the skin-like texture of the material gives the Goblin the appearance of being an actual goblin, rather than a man in a rubber suit. The highly detailed mask completes the illusion, causing many people to think that the Green Goblin is actually some type of mutant.
Over the base layer are the more theatrical elements of the Goblin ensemble. The purple outfit he wears serves no real purpose other than affording him more modesty than many in the spandex crowd. But built into his gloves are miniature weaponized conducters that enable the Green Goblin to shoot powerful bolts of electricity from his hands. These have a pretty limited range but they are an effective way to stun opponents who are more powerful than him.
WEAPONRY: The Green Goblin's arsenal consists mostly of pumpkin bombs. These lightweight, festively painted grenades pack a very powerful explosive payload.
Another Goblin staple are the razor bats he carries on his belt. They are basically just razor-sharp discs that he throws willy-nilly. The razor bats are very aerodynamic and can cut through a lot of materials when thrown with sufficient force. They can't cut through most metals though, and will get stuck in dense substances like concrete.
On very rare occasions the Green Goblin has been known to use a pike to stab opponents while on his glider. This doesn't usually work out very well, but a functioning stun pike can usually be found in most of the Goblin's secret lairs.
MANIPULATION: Norman has acquired wealth by making one amoral decision after another. Throughout his life he has become progressively more skilled at manipulating people in order to have them acheive his goals for him. He is often able to get enemies to accomplish his objectives for him simply by using insinuation in order to set them on a path he's already laid out for them. His manipulation is usually a more involved process though. He has evidence planted at someone's residence in order to remove competitors, or he has enemies spied on in order to blackmail them. If all else fails he can usually bribe somebody or threaten them. He prefers to operate as smoothly as possible though, using his superior intellect to convince people that his methods are right, or to find some other way of tricking them into coming around to his way of thinking.
ACADEMICS: As a college graduate with degrees in chemistry and engineering, Norman has spent a lot of time getting educated. Much of his early education was self-taught, through constant reading and experimenting. He's also worked in industry for many years, putting his knowledge to practical use. With his exposure to the Goblin Formula, Norman has been able to learn at a rate acheivable by only a few minds on the planet. He has put this ability to good use, learning as much as he can each day, trying to solve the mysteries of the universe, and make a buck off of the answers he finds.
ENGINEERING: One of his original areas of expertise, Norman has proven to be a first-rate inventor on many occasions. He's added personal touches to the products made by his company for year. However, his greatest triumph has been his Goblin gear. His glider, for example, utilizes technology that borders on pseudo-science in order to allow him to acheive sub-sonic speeds while standing on a glorified metal surfboard. With rockets. His pumpkin bombs are much more powerful than the standard grenades issued to the military, but are also lighter and much more festive. When he's having a good day, Norman is capable of making things that are almost mind-boggling.
CHEMISTRY: Another of Norman's original study fields. Norman was never the brilliant chemist that his partner Mendel Stromm was, but he was able to put together Stromm's brilliant research and create a workable Goblin Formula. The formula that Norman created had terrible side effects, but most people wouldn't have even been able to achieve that much. Since being exposed to the formula, Norman's capacity for problem-solving has increased even further allowing him to potentially create even more advanced forms of the formula, among other things.
GLIDING: The glider that Norman uses as the Green Goblin is impossible for a normal human to operate. Only those with enhanced reflexes, strength and durability would even have a chance. But even someone who shared (or exceeded) Norman's abilities would have a difficult time figuring out to fly around on the glider. It's a very complicated machine that can do lots of cool stuff. Norman has spent enough time flying on the glider that he is able to operate it effortlessly.
FIGHTING: Not a trained combatant by any means, Norman has still managed to pick up a bit of hand-to-hand experience. With his capacity for learning, he has become somewhat proficient at punching people. Being able to move faster than an unenhanced human makes beating up normal people pretty easy. He doesn't do so well against the super-powered though and prefers to solve his conflicts by throwing around a lot of explosives and flying away.
WEAPONRY: Norman has basic knowledge of conventional weaponry. He can operate a handgun as well as most professionals, but where he really shines is with more exotic weapon types. Specifically, the types that he has incorporated into his Green Goblin armory. Things like flying platforms that shoot rockets or forcepikes that zap people or gloves that shoot energy beams out of them.
MANAGEMENT: Norman has been telling people what to do since he was a teenager. Over the years he has developed a great deal of finesse when dealing with people. He knows when to coax and when to intimidate. He knows ways to motivate people so that they want to do what he tells them. He can even manage to make people want to do things without them ever knowing that they're being used. However, just because he knows a lot of advanced management methods doesn't mean that he always employs them. Often his pride gets in the way and he simply bullies people into doing what he wants. This is especially true when the Goblin personality is asserting itself.
DIPLOMACY: When running a corporation one has to be able to maintain good relations with all sorts of people. One has to court investors, schmooze politicians and law enforcement, and appease rival companies. Norman has gotten very good at doing all of these things. When he's at his best he's a silver-tongued devil, telling people what they want to hear and making gestures of good faith like nobody's business. When he's having a bad day though, he tends to do more harm than good when he meets with important people.
BUSINESS: Norman knows pretty much everything there is to know about amassing a fortune. He is familiar not only with all of the theories about running a business, but he's also familiar with every individual facet of the company he runs. If he weren't already the owner and CEO, he could work at any of the many highly technical positions that his company offers and excel.
VEHICLES: Norman can operate conventional vehicles about as well as the average person. He doesn't usually do much driving and he doesn't pilot his own aircraft, but he could do either if the circumstances called for it. Anybody with such an advanced knowledge of aerodynamics could surely manage to land a passenger jet, although said jet might not be in such great shape after the landing.
DISGUISE: He's not anywhere in say, the Chameleon's league, but Norman has proven able to make himself unrecognizable. For example, nobody has ever suspected him of being the Green Goblin, even though he has the Goblin's exact physical dimensions. He also has been able to disguise himself well enough to keep his identity from being discovered during the years when he was presumed dead.
STRATEGY: Norman's enhanced intelligence makes him a gifted strategic thinker. He has been strategically overcoming obstacles in his way for many years in the corporate and scientific sector. It is only recently that he has begun to turn his intellect towards endeavors related to physical combat. With his relative inexperience, he isn't really the best-suited person to be leading a charge on a SHIELD helicarrier, but he could probably concoct a good plan to do so from behind the scenes.
TECHNOLOGY: With his scientific background and enhanced intellect, technological deviced are a traipse for Norman to operate. He is very proficient at operating computers and such, and knows his way around virtually every piece of equipment one could expect to find in a cutting-edge laboratory. He also has access to technology that most people have never even heard of, including some of his own design that he uses exclusively for his own personal research.
OSCORP: Norman Osborn is the owner and CEO of one of the largest corporate entities in the world, Oscorp. He has guided it from its humble origins as a simple chemical plant into the multi-national structure that it is today. Although the prospects of the company are not always bright, and there have been many tough times for the business, it still proves to be a reliable source of massive amounts of income. Oscorp also has many lucrative government contracts, which means that a lot of the technology used by the military and law enforcement has the word 'Oscorp' stamped on it. This has made him an important figure in the world, although not a very well-known one.
GOBLIN TECH: In addition to the basic Goblin Formula that gave Osborn all of his superhuman abilities, he also has created or adapted a lot of pieces of technology in order to have a very impressive arsenal. With his multi-stage glider, his protective flight-suit, his wide array of explosives, and various exotic weapons, the Green Goblin is a force to be reckoned with.
CONTACTS: Throughout the decades, Norman has built up a pretty extensive list of contacts in the business, political, and criminal spheres. Many of these people owe him favors, or could be easily blackmailed in order for Norman to get a piece of legislation passed through, or get something smuggled in or out of the country. Additionally, many people who work for other corporations are secretly on his payroll, supplying him with valuable information.
ACCOUNTS: Norman has money stashed all over the place. He's got the regular accounts that he has reported to the government and paid taxes on, but he's also got bank accounts set aside in foreign countries as a safety net.
HIDEOUTS: Over the years Norman has equipped several properties with hidden lairs to store his Green Goblin equipment. These lairs aren't especially impressive, but most have a fully stocked armory and some sort of alarm system.
CRAZY: The driving force behind most of his actions, Norman's insanity will undoubtedly be his eventual undoing. He never knows when his delicate mental balance is going to be upset by his rampaging alter ego. His plans, although meticulously thought out, are often defeated simply because he is too manic to complete them. In addition, the unpredictability of his other side makes it very hard to cover his tracks and could conceivably result in his criminal activities being found out.
VINDICTIVE: It doesn't take much to get on Norman's naughty list, and once someone has managed that feat they aren't likely to ever get off of it. Norman has wasted millions of dollars on revenge schemes. Some of them have been successful, but most of them have not. There are many other things Norman could spend his time on rather than trying to kill Spider-Man, but he inevitably finds himself back in his lair, constructing grenades, tweaking his gliders, and cackling like an absolute loon.
EGO: It's hard to say exactly why Norman thinks so much of himself, but he sees himself as a being superior to all others. This warped view of reality makes him an especially nasty customer when anyone challenges him. He is usually unwilling to admit that any defeat that he suffers is a result of his own failure. Rather, he finds a scapegoat, no matter how implausible it might seem to a rational person. This unwillingness to admit failure makes it very hard for him to learn from his mistakes, and basically guarantees that he will keep doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results each time.
DUAL IDENTITY: Having to keep his Green Goblin activities separate from his Norman Osborn daily life is quite a chore. If it was ever suspected that Norman was the Green Goblin his entire life would be wrecked. His company would be taken from him and he'd most likely spend the rest of his days rotting in a SHIELD maximum security prison. But even though the risks are definately not equal to the rewards, he continues to refuse to get treatment, and keeps gliding around in a costume and throwing grenades at stuff.
OVERCONFIDENT: Because he doesn't think that he is capable of failure, and thinks of himself as superior to his enemies, Norman is often guilty of one of the major mistakes of supervillains everywhere: he underestimates his opponents. He is frequently defeated simply because he treats his opponents' capabilities with disdain. He often plans his criminal escapades very carefully, but he tends to leave no margin for disruption. It is his disrespect for mediocre opponents that has enabled him to be bested by them so often.
POWER-HUNGRY: Running a multibillion dollar corporation and having significant political clout is not enough for Norman Osborn. since 'ascending' mentally to become the Green Goblin his lust for power has grown exponentially. He wants more power than he could ever possibly handle or appreciate and will stop at nothing to get it. While this should be a scary thought for the rest of humanity, the desire has so far brought nothing but bad things for Norman. He isn't likely to take over the world anytime soon. He is however very likely to keep trying.
ENEMIES: The most obvious name that goes on Norman's list of enemies is Spider-Man. He has been a pest for years and continues to occupy a significant amount of Norman's scheming. But Norman also has a plethora of other threats to his financial holdings, his criminal enterprises, and to his costumed persona. Law enforcement have been after the Green Goblin for some time, and there are plenty of officials investigating Norman's business practices. He has also run afoul of a handful of other costumed heroes and supervillains, making his position in the world very precarious indeed.
