Character Details
Jeanne Foucault was born to parents of ill repute, both having been stark criminals in their past of the ordinary variety, without a trace of super powers. But Jeanne was no ordinary child; she was a polymath with eidetic memory, meaning not only could she recall in perfect detail anything she saw and heard, but she also gained and retained skills and knowledge at a glance and a single read through educational material. Showing such a great advancement compared to her peers, partaking math while they were learning to count, she was taken to be tested for the mutant gene, and subsequently to other indicator tests for paranormal powers, all came out negative.
Jeanne's parents were delighted with the great fortune that befell them, and immediately used their gifted daughter for their own means. Jeanne was taken to classes and given access to information on a myriad of competition forms, and was given rewards for accomplishments in any activity that brought her parents money and acclaim. Before her age reached double digits, she was already winning equestrian tournaments, followed by more winnings in competitions in varied sports, ranging from chess, to billiards, to gymnastics, to fencing and a wide range of martial arts. While her room was full of trophies and medals, her parents' bank account was full of money from her winnings. Jeanne wasn't oblivious to the fact her parents were using her, but at her age had no choice but to do as they say.
With an insatiable appetite for knowledge and skills, Jeanne kept learning whenever she could, that is when she wasn't entered into competition in various sports to win more money for her parents. Eventually she got scholarships and people from Academia intervened and Jeanne was allowed to go study at MIT, from which she graduated at age 14 with multiple degrees.
Following her graduation, Jeanne developed a theory; she believes that her real father is the Taskmaster who must have share some intimate time with her mother while her parents attended one of his criminal schools. She is determined to find him and verify it, but from what sciences tells her, the only way she could be so similar to him is because she has his genes.
Having continued her training in martial arts, combat and weapon training, she has surpassed all of the teachers who were available to her. To advance into higher levels she would need to seek out some of the hard to reach true masters wherever they may be in Asia, or find a way to engage in activity with some of the super heroes or villains about the city. She has been toying with the idea but hasn't quite decided which path to take, though she has been taking occasional outing in a costume, taking the name Finesse, while stopping criminals from picking on the helpless around her vicinity.
Jeanne has also persisted in her gymnastics training and was called to the Olympics gymnastics team, where she excelled and was very quick to become the best member of the team. The only thing that made Jeanne consider not competing in the Olympics is how her teammates have been trying to get her disqualified. There has been an increased frequency in various tests for super powers and abilities, all of which she passed with negative results, and from her ability to read lips she could tell how nobody on the team liked her. She was sure to set some records if she actually got to compete, but having competed all her life for her parents, she felt that she didn't need to prove yet again how she's the best. Instead, Jeanne left all the animosity behind by quitting from the Olympic team.
Free from the Olympic Team, Jeanne went back to what she always did best, studying. This time NYU was her destination, looking for a new environment with more opportunities for employment while she completed her Masters degress, and started on her doctorate at only 18 years old. During her stay in New York she's become even more fascinated with the activity of super heroes and villains, and got into some more action as Finesse.
One of the papers Jeanne drew on for her thesis was a research conducted by Dr. Nemesis, who took note of Jeanne when she published her thesis. After some research on Jeanne, Dr. Nemesis hacked into her computer, and that brought to some lively exchange between the two, leading to Jeanne being hired by Dr. Nemesis.
During their work together, Dr. Nemesis got Finesse involved in a plot by the government to rewrite mutant's DNA to make them normal humans, during her work on the mission to stop this operation, Jeanne came to the X-Mansion and the Massachusetts Academy quite often. So the Mutant Massacre had an effect on her despite the fact she was never tested positive for mutant genes, she realized where she stands in the fight between humans and mutants and for now she continues to stand with Dr. Nemesis and the X-Men.
Savant - Jeanne has insatiable appetite for knowledge and skills, she reads whatever she can put her hands on, sees any documentary she considers of worth, views lectures online and hacks into databases that contain information she can benefit from. There are very few people who could parallel her ability to think fast and retain ridiculous amounts of information. She could easily win a game of Jeopardy, but she could just as easily by useful in a myriad of technological, mathematical and science profession, pulling out the answers for issues that would confound others.
Computer-like - While Jeanne is quite the savant in a wide field of subjects and has mastered many skillsets, she is unfortunately very computer like in her mannerism. She's intelligent, she understands psychology, but she fails to understand people and emotions. She tends to be painfully honest and blunt when talking to people, and doesn't understand their reactions when they don't take it too well. Sometimes when she tries to help someone, she winds up crushing them to the ground, as they only hear the criticism and not the advice on how to correct that is lacking. Jeanne is quite annoyed by it. She can give a fairly good psychoanalysis on people, recognize psychological symptoms and reasons for their being the way they are, but when the human element get involved and things don't go as predicted by Jeanne's analytical mind, she's confounded.
Discourteous Manner - Jeanne doesn't go around the bush, she doesn't sugar coat, and she doesn't seem to have an understanding of proper decorum. When she has something to say, she will say it precisely as she means it, to a person's face. This does not come as a result of Jeanne being callous, rather she detected a flaw in a person's conduct, and she lets them know so they can correct their flaw. She is very analytical, doesn't quite understand emotions, and certainly fails to grasp proper decorum and courtesy.
Perfectionist - Jeanne likes to proclaim that she is never wrong and never makes mistakes, this of course stems from her vast amount of knowledge and skillsets, coupled with the fact she keeps attaining more skills and abilities by the day. While she may not be necessarily right, she believes it completely because from her experience it is true. She is something of a perfectionist, outputting perfect work each time she has been required to do something, whether for her parents, for her instructors, or for classes in MIT. She wants to excel and become an authority in every subject she can get her hands on, and so she is driven to always attain more information, every day she wants to be better than the day before. If she has to do a few amoral things such as hacking to get to some information that would otherwise be denied to her, she would do so without blinking.
Undeterred - With her superior array of skills, vast knowledge and sharp intellect, Jeanne tends to get what she wants. While she's yet to face super-villains, at this point Jeanne has yet to meet a challenge she could meet, nor an opponent she couldn't best. Her childhood was filled with competitions, awards and rewards. Needless to say, she is brimming with confidence and nothing daunts her when she goes after a goal.
Analytical Mind - While most of her social flaws stem from her manner of thinking like a computer, that very trait is what helps Jeanne be a professional problem solver. She never considers anything as a whole; she disassembles every situation to its most basic elements, and performs simulations of likely scenarios in her head based on her knowledge and observation of different element in any given situation. This is how she manages to come up with best course of action in very little time, and discard pointless or losing course of action from the onset.
MEDICINE: Dropping from the Olympic Gymnastics Team, Jeanne went back to school working on attaining more degrees in the next three years of her life, after having graduated at 14 from MIT. Amongst the different subjects she mastered, one was Medicine.
OMNI: With her special ability and photographic memory, Jeanne is omni-skilled in every sense. She only needs to see an expert at work to gain expert level mastery of any particular skill, this makes her learning vast and fast. Mathematics, Business, Finance, Literature, Art, Science, Philosophy are just some of the subjects she can partake in without looking out of place in academia or industry. Her capacity to learn isn't limited to academic subjects, but extend to the physical realm as well. She can do Olympic level sports, has Olympic level endurance, black belt level fighting techniques, Olympic level swimming, climbing, and parkour.
EMT TRAINING: Jeanne has undergone EMT Training so she can treat her own injuries as well as assist others when her presence can be the difference between life and death and there's no time to wait for help to arrive. She figured with how dangerous the world is, that is one skill that not only she can benefit from, but others as well. It's not that she goes out to volunteer her services as a medic, it's just another skill that she knows, and if she happens to be nearby when needed, she can offer her assistance.
GYMNAST EXTRAORDINARE: To be qualified to the Olympics in Gymnastics a gymnast must reach elite level, that is hard enough to do with a lifetime worth of training, Jeanne accomplished it by simply deciding to excel in the sport post graduation from MIT. While she likely would have done very well in the Olympics, constant accusation of performance enhancing powers and never ending test for mutant gene and such brought Jeanne to give up on the Olympics.
HACKER: Jeanne is a hacker in the truest sense of the word; she knows almost all there is to know about computers, she handles them as if they were her body limbs. She has a much easier time communicating with computers than she does with humans. She can write her own programs, alter programs written by others, improve and optimize almost any computer, and naturally also break into the most secure systems. Given a state of the art computer, Jeanne is a lethal weapon. She is one of those who would take offense at a cracker being referred to as a hacker, since there's so much more to learn, so much more to master and crackers clearly don't know any better. While she may not be able to hack into Tony Stark or Reed Richard's computers, she can do just fine with the likes of NSA, CIA, FBI, etc'.
HUMAN ROSETTA STONE: To be able to get around in most places she'd care to go to, Jeanne has picked up a wide set of languages such as French, Russian, Spanish, German, Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Hebrew and Arabic. If there is a language that she doesn't know, she could pick it up easily just by reading online databases of translation services.
LIP READING: From a very young age Jeanne didn't like it when grownups were talking about her without letting her be part of the conversation, to that end she picked up on lip reading so she'll be able to tell what is going on even when she's sent away from the room, left to look on from afar. This skill comes in handy every now and then, and it's not out of the realm of possibility that espionage agencies would try to recruit her somewhere down the line.
MARTIAL ARTS EXPERT: While Jeanne initially entered the world of martial arts because her parents wanted her to win them money at various competitions, doing remarkably well to the point she was allowed to participate in boys events, she later in life adopted martial arts as a way of self-defense. Jeanne made it a point to learn, or observe martial arts instructors, Chinese people at the park early in the morning, and watch fighting tournaments on television, taking advantage of every avenue to learn as much Martial Arts styles as she could. Her skill level matches the levels of a lifetime of Martial Arts, but the difference comes in experience, which is something she will still need to gain on her. She has the moves, but not necessarily the best knowledge on when to use them. She would easily best inferior fighters, but a true Master will find weaknesses in her lacking experience to best her.
PSYCHOLOGY: To try and help her with her lacking understanding of people and their emotions, Jeanne picked up some psychology while she was at MIT. Granted it was never her major, she picked up more than enough in the library alone to be able to do a thorough psychoanalysis on a person if she cared to do it. She can talk about people the way a Discovery Channel Narrator does, which doesn't endear her to anyone.
ACADEMIC DEGREES: Jeanne has garnered fame in some circles for having graduated MIT at 14 years old, more staggering is the fact she completed not one but multiple degrees. She currently holds degrees in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Physics. Following her fallout with the Olympic Gymnastics Team, she went back to school, elevating her degrees to PhD, as well as picking up Medicine. She is by all means a savant, and is likely quite famous in Academic circles.
AWARDS: Jeanne has a roomful of trophies, award certificates and medals from years of sports competitions, martial arts competitions, as well as computer science and math competitions. If ever she needed to impress anyone, she could just show them to her room.
BATONS: When she goes out with the purpose of fighting crime in mind, Finesse likes to use a pair of fighting batons. While she prefers to use lethal weapons such as swords, sai blades, and switchblades, she acknowledges that batons wouldn't draw as much attention to her. There's also the added benefit of having a better chance to down an opponent without a killing strike, allowing for arrests and possible redemptions. After all, you must first give a person a chance to learn from experience, before deciding they can do nothing but bad with their lives.
FUNDS: Jeanne has the means to get money on demand, whether it be playing with the stock market, gambling (should she manage to enter such an establishment), plainly getting a job or worst case scenario, stealing via hacking or swindling people in bets on pool game or sports games, money is never a concern or a motivator for Jeanne. She is satisfied with having the means to attain more information, and making sure she keeps bettering herself each day.
LAPTOP: Jeanne's laptop is her most fearsome weapon, a state of the art machine that she custom built, it's able to serve her in all of her endeavors which are a bit out of the range of how a typical teenager would use a computer. While others spend time on social websites and entertainment, she uses her computer to learn, program, hack, and fend from hackers. If she cared for it, she could probably do enough damage to bring a corporate down. Luckily, she's not in the business of gain best on business espionage, instead just like Johnny 5, she's looking for info, lots of it.
POLYMATH: By definition a polymath is a person of great and varied learning, and Jeanne fits that definition just fine, particularly because her ability allows her to retain massive amounts of information and learn at a ridiculous rate. If she were to read an exhaustive book about deferential equations, she would master the subject at the moment she finished the book, and the reading itself wouldn't take her long, she'd just have to look at each page briefly. That is how she could graduate MIT at such a young age with multiple degrees, the lectures for the most part got in her way, as she just needed the access to the data. This is not limited to academics by any means, she learns just as fast any subject and topic out there, be it physical or mental.
EIDETIC MEMORY: Anything she sees or hears, Jeanne remembers in perfect detail. No doubt her eidetic memory helps Jeanne a great deal in being the polymath that she is. She recalls entire conversations word by word, and can quote a person precisely a long time after the conversation occurred. She recalls twitches in facial expression that show stress, discomfort and can generally tell if someone is impersonating another person but doesn't mimic their emotive facial patterns and choice of words to perfection. She can tell upon entering a room what each person is wearing, where are they sitting or standing and what were they doing at the time she entered. Given a glance at an electric circuit, she'll be able to recreate it. Given a glance at a source code, she'll be able to recreate and likely improve the software. There is one caveat to this as a tie-in with her photographic reflexes ability, namely, as a result of retaining massive amounts of information, as she grows up she will start to forget things that are not essential to survival or success in what missions she may face, for instance, how her daughter looks like.
PHOTOGRAPHIC REFLEXES: The key that ties in with Jeanne's photographic memory and polymath abilities, to unlock her potential to tremendous heights, is her ability of Photographic Reflexes. It also happens to be the chief element behind Jeanne's theory that Taskmaster is her real father. Any action Jeanne sees performed, she can perform herself in a flawless manner. If she were to look at a sniper perform an impossible shot, she will be able to do the same a moment later. If someone performs an incredible feat of acrobatics, she will be able to perform the same seconds later. If she were to see a guitarist perform at a concert and get a good look, she'll be able to play the guitar at the same level soon after the show. This is what drives Jeanne to see and experience as much as she can, so she can increase her arsenal. This drive of her is probably a result of how her parents pushed her to excel from a very young age.
PEAK CONDITION: With all the martial arts, weapon fighting forms, and Olympic level gymnastics training that she's been through, Jeanne is at the peak level of human condition. Her speed, stamina, strength, endurance and flexibility are sure to impress any who simply sees her as a science nerd teenaged girl.
LIE DETECTION: Gifted with Eidetic Memory, coupled with her solid understanding of psychology and behavioural science, Finesse is more often than not able to tell when someone is lying to her face. Usually it's because she perfectly recalls the true facts from previous interactions, but in other cases it could stem from minute facial expression, tone and inflection.
TASKMASTER: Jeanne is a brilliant young girl, and it didn't take her long to theorize her parents cannot possibly be her real parents, at least her father couldn't. As everything can be found in genes, she's come to conclude that Taskmaster has to be her real father, and she's set on a quest to try and meet him and find out for herself. The problem is that others may reach such a conclusion as well, and that may not shed the best of lights on Jeanne, and could lead to mistrust with certain people or organizations. There's also the question of what would happen if she finally did run into Taskmaster. Would he try to kill her? Would he accept her as his own? If he does, would that lead to her corruption towards a life of crime? Jeanne is a bit on the amoral side to begin with, the way she measures anything analyticly rather than by a set of moral codes.
AUDACIOUS: As Jeanne has supreme confidence in her abilities, and is certain she never makes mistakes, she tends to partakes in endeavors that other may not. She may try some crazy stunts, or carry out a plan based on an untested theory which she calculated should work in a particular way, and of course she never backs down from a challenge. While this may lead her to certain discoveries and breakthroughs, it can also jeopardize her needlessly. Sooner or later, Jeanne is bound to find someone who will deal her a first defeat, and it remains to be seen how she'll cope with an unfamiliar territory such as failure.
EVENTUAL MEMORY LAPSES: While Jeanne has photographic memory and will tell anyone who challenges a fact she stated about the past that she remembers everything, period, her future isn't as great from that department. As she continuously absorbs more data, more information and harnesses more abilities, Jeanne is going to fill her memory to capacity. This will lead to her brain retaining everything essential for survival and successful completion of endeavors, but it will come at the cost of forgetting more mundane things such as who she met last week, where she was a month ago, and all the way to the radical such as in the future, forgetting how her daughter looks like.
SOCIALLY DYSFUNCTIONAL: Jeanne can interact with computers like no other, one might assume she thinks and speaks binary. With humans, on the other hand, Jeanne is an absolute disaster. Much like a psychopath, she can fake emotions, she can appear normal, but she doesn't understand emotions. She is far too analytical, far too scientific, and tends to look at almost any situation objectively while assessing the best course of action. As a result she can insult people in the worst way while trying to give them a tip, or simply talking to them, as she doesn't use white lies and have no sense of decorum and socially accepted behaviors. Not surprisingly, she didn't have too many friends in childhood.
