Character Details
- Elizabeth Clark was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. Unlike many that get into the heroing business, she was neither an orphan nor from a broken home. Instead, she was raised by a loving mother and father in a comfortable upper middle-class setting.
- Growing up, she was always a fairly small girl, which led to a couple of her different interests. Her parents signed her up for gymnastics classes, both to get her out of the house and to give her an opportunity to make friends away from school. The other interest spawned by her small size was an interest in entomology. There was something about the variety and complexity (and smallness) of insects that she found amazing.
- While she stuck with gymnastics and generally did well in school, Lizzy was never the most popular girl. Maybe because she liked bugs, maybe because she was a shrimp, maybe just because she was one of those kids. It never phased her, though. She read comic books, played video games, and caught moths happily by herself.
- Growing up into a teenager, Lizzy continued to follow the beat of her own drummer. Having never wanted for anything her entire life, of course, was the perfect grounds for some serious teenaged rebellion. She began listening to loud music, dying her hair, and generally picking up an attitude. She went from 'that weird nerd girl' to 'that weird punk girl."
- After high school, Lizzy headed off toward college with aspirations of chasing an entomology degree. Of course, her punky style didn't fit in with the majority of other students in her various biology-based classes. By this point in her life though, she was pretty settled in the idea that she would never find her niche.
- The real dramatic change that came about was due to a bored undergrad Lizzy volunteering for an evoked potential experiment in the biology department. Neuroscience was definitely not her cup of tea, but it seemed like an easy way to make a couple hundred bucks. Sitting in a chair and being poked at to record the electrical response in her brain seemed boring more than anything.
- During the experiment, a massive power surge hit the neurobiology lab. Luckily for Lizzy, the sudden shock didn't do any real damage to her. Instead, it blew the doors off of a potential that had always laid dormant in her. A bright pink glow started at her eyes, then quickly washed over her body. In the ensuing confusion, the darkened lab was wrecked as the panicked girl somehow destroyed much of the equipment and then blasted through a wall to escape.
- Laying low and carefully exploring the strange power she suddenly had at her fingertips, it took a few weeks for Lizzy to begin to understand it. Telekinesis normally manifested itself as the ability to manipulate external objects. Lizzy, somehow, was inclined to use it to affect herself. She found out that, through concentration, she could greatly enhance her own strength, protect herself from harm, and even fly.
- Having read comics books as a kid and followed the news of teams like the Fantastic Four and Avengers on TV, the thought of becoming some kind of a super-hero was the next logical progression. Creating a costume for herself, Lizzy conjured up the persona of Firefly and began a one-woman crusade to stop crime in her native Chicago. It failed miserably.
- While she had plenty of power, Lizzy quickly discovered that it was tricky to control and that actually knowing how to fight helps when fighting bank robbers and superpowered criminals. Firefly quickly became the butt of many jokes, thanks to nicknames like Glow-Bug and Glow-Worm. Luckily for her, most of the beatings she took were more humiliating than grave.
- After several months of 'retirement' from wanting to be a hero, Lizzy decided that the power she had could not simply be ignored and decided to do something about it. She packed up and left Chicago for New York, the epicenter of much of the supernormal activity in the world.
- In New York, she works by day as a research assistant in the biology department at NYU. By night, she does not so much fight crime as try to learn to be more effective at it. She has enrolled in hand-to-hand classes, has become more serious about gymnastics again, and has even rechristened herself with a newer, more fearsome name. Firefly and her failures of the past will be forgotten and evil-doers everywhere will cower at the name of…
