Character Details
Jacob Gavin Jr. was groomed from birth to take over his father's successful international courier business. As Jake grew his father began to doubt whether or not his son had the chops to take the reins of the multinational corporation. Jacob Sr. was something of a business genius. He came from a wealthy family and bought his first stock at age ten. It seemed however, that his son had not developed his father's keen business sense.
It was only when Jake hit puberty and his mutation developed that Jacob Sr. realized what an asset his son could be. Rather than be ostracized for his powers like so many other young mutants, his father accepted him unconditionally. And why not? Although Jacob Sr. was not a mutant himself, he had more exposure to them than most through his business dealings.
Jake himself was an awkward boy, made even more awkward by the sudden realization that he was a mutant. He felt something was different about him when he woke one day, but it was confirmed it when one day in shop class, he severed two fingers. He was rushed to the hospital and the pieces saved. Miraculously, the fingers reattached themselves and healed perfectly within two days. He showed his father his injury and Jacob Sr. brought Jake to a state of the art medical facility which was able to determine the nature of his mutation. Because of that, Jake was able to work on controlling his powers at an earlier age than some mutants. He had a whole dossier to read over that explained exactly how his ability worked.
His mutation made Jake shyer as he passed through school. He always felt like one wrong move would reveal his mutation, even though he had it easier than most kids. Once he got out of high school and was sure his powers weren't going to betray him, he began to feel better about himself and he began to draw confidence from his near-indestructibility.
Despite his shortcoming, Jacob Sr. groomed his son to the best of his ability. All throughout high school and through college (where Jake earned a business degree) he worked as a gofer for his father's company. While he was still in school, his courier work only sent him around New York. Once he graduated, he became his father's chief go-man.
Jake was always intimidated by his father, and he was well aware that he wasn't living up to his expectations either in intelligence or business savvy. Not only that, but Jacob Sr. was a fairly intimidating man. Though it was never directed at him, he saw what happened to those who disappointed him enough to make -sure- he never let his father down. It didn't help that his father was involved in some shady operations that he became more aware of the older he got. But the sanctity of a courier's job was drilled into him, which included discretion above all else.
When he had proved himself, Jake became his father's most trusted courier. He worked for many high profile clients, acting as a go-between, especially when the client didn't feel the person they were dealing with was worthy of meeting them face-to-face. These clients never knew he was a mutant when he was hired, but they would occasionally find out. Very few of these jobs made use of his shape-shifting abilities, and that served Jake just fine. He'd rather not use that aspect of his powers. He became known for his discretion, but he also gained a very healthy self-preservation instinct. He stayed in one piece and out of trouble by knowing when to turn tail and run. When he's not in any danger, Jake is a natural salesman and quite charming. When he finds himself in danger, his best defense is to drop into the 'fetal position' despite the fact that his mutation means it's very difficult to knock him out or injure him severely.
