Character Details
Richard Rider was an under-achieving high school student from Long Island who was randomly chosen to replace a dying member of the intergalactic Nova Corps. Granted a portion of the Nova Force energy which in turn gave him super powers, Richard became the costumed hero Nova.
For months Nova used his powers to fight crime and injustice in NYC, eagerly befriending other heroes when faced with common foes. He met and briefly hero-fought Thor, fought crime alongside Spider-Man, was drafted for a mission for SHIELD by Nick Fury, and then finally with the Fantastic Four foiled the Sphinx on Xandar, home of the Nova Corps itself.
Learning that Xandar was at war, Nova decided to stay in space and fought for a year in the Skrull-Xandar conflict. By the end of the war Nova was homesick, and returned to Earth even though he was required to give up his share of Nova Force.
Unbeknownst to Richie, the Queen of Xandar arranged for him to regain his Nova Force energy before the destruction of Xandar at the hands of Nebula.
Unbeknownst to everyone, the portion of the Nova Force possessed by Richie is capable of one day rebooting the Xandarian Worldmind and restoring Xandar and the Nova Corps.
Back on Earth and seemingly powerless, Rider struggled with mininimum wage jobs and a lack of purpose. He worked out obsessively but couldn't come close to regaining the strength he had as Nova.
When recruiting for the team that would become the New Warriors, Night Thrasher threw Richie off a roof, believing stress and adrenaline would reactivate his powers. Fortunately for all he was correct.
As Nova once again, Richard fashioned a new costume for himself and became a founding member of the New Warriors. He's had several adventures with the team including fights with Terrax, Juggernaut, the Hellions and assorted minor villains. Night Thrasher has recently presented Rider with a new high-tech costume that simulates the appearance and capabilities his original Nova Corps uniform.
