Character Details

Born in 1928, Natalia was orphaned at 6 when her home burned in an attack on Stalingrad. She was rescued and raised for a time by Ivan Petrovitch Bezukhov, a Soviet soldier.

A gifted acrobat and dancer even at 8, she came to the attention of Soviet intelligence in the late '30s, and taken in to be trained with other young girls as agents. Given her natural talents, She started formal training in ballet as a cover for her activities.

During a training mission in 1941, when she was only 13, she and others were captured by the Nazis and taken to a facility in Madripoor. They were liberated by a group that included Captain America and James Howlett. She ran into Wolverine a few more times over the next decades, sometimes working together and sometimes on opposing sides.

In the 40s, governments fell over themselves to try to perfect bio-engineering. Natalia and a few others, as the best among their peers, were chosen for experimentation. She fared the best of them. Her body clock was slowed significantly, her natural immunities were enhanced, and her physical potential improved to allow her to train to the peak of human ability.
In 1945, at 17, Natalia started on her official career in espionage. Being the end of World War 2, this involved her in a few very interesting moments and brought her briefly into contact with a few of the costumed set of the time.

After WW2, Natalia (or Natasha on occasion) was trained in the Black Widow program, to further enhance her skills. Eventually, she was given the title. Throughout, Soviet intelligence manipulated her life to keep her loyal and determined, including faking the death of the man she'd married.

The ongoing cold war kept Black Widow busy. She was often used to get close to men in power and learn useful things before leaving or killing them, as befitting her nom de guerre. This earned her an extensive file with the US government and made her required reading with the FBI and others who might need to keep an eye out for her.

After the cold war ended, Natalia continued her work in other ways, spending part of her time training others and part on assignment. One of those more recent assignments, in 2000, brought her into contact with Hawkeye, who was thought a villain at the time. She seduced and manipulated him into doing some jobs for her, until he realized the truth and turned on her. It was one of the few times she felt badly about using someone, though she refused to admit to herself she might have actual feelings for him. Usually, her marks weren't exactly the best people. Clint, on the other hand, really was.
Starting well before her use of Clint, Natalia's assignments were becoming questionable for her. She became disillusioned with her controllers, and then disgusted when she was brainwashed by her own people into attacking the Avengers in 2001. When that conditioning was broken, she returned to Russia only long enough to break all ties with the agency. Fortunately, Natalia had more than enough on them to ensure her safety while leaving the country for her new home.

Resettling in the United States, Natalia arranged the new identity of Natasha Romanoff with SHIELD in exchange for some work for them. In addition, she started to work alongside Avengers as an ally, but didn't actually join the team yet due to personal issues that included realizing her husband was still alive as Red Guardian, only to lose him again when he was shot in China.

She did rekindle her romance with Hawkeye briefly, but then turned her interest towards Daredevil. They were together a while, first on the east coast and then in California. Though they returned to New York briefly to fight Magneto alongside the Avengers, after which she was given full membership, she wasn't ready to stay there yet.
She still remained on the west coast after her relationship with Matt ended, forming the Champions with several other heroes including Hercules, with whom she began a rebound relationship. Eventually personality issues caused the team to disband, and she and Hercules returned to New York to rejoin the Avengers. Eventually, the two drifted apart and their relationship ended. She would come and go some over the next few years, as the team roster changed often and for a variety of reasons.

Natasha continued to work occasionally for SHIELD as well, along with her own matters. These brought into into conflict with Viper, Bullseye and the Hand, among others. The last actually killed her with a poison, but she was resurrected mystically by Daredevil's ally, Stone. She returned to full time with the Avengers with Acts of Vengeance, and over time has become Captain America's deputy leader of the team.
