Character Details
- It didn't take long for Jeanne-Marie's life to take a turn for the worse, not long after she and her twin brother Jean-Paul were born, their parents died in a car accident. Brought to their mother's cousins, the Martin family, it was decided that only Jean-Paul would be adopted while Jeanne-Marie was sent to be raised at Madame DuPont's School for Girls. Jeanne-Marie grew up oblivious to the fact she had a twin brother.
- Madame DuPont's proved to be a remanent of older times, run by devout Catholic nuns, it staunchly kept to ways of old in regards to education and administration of punishments and corrective measures. Thanks to Jeanne-Marie's pointed ears, the Headmistress — Soeur Anne — thought she had an evil spirit about her, which brought about an endless series of cruel punishments, often without reason. This resulted in Jeanne-Marie growing up to become timid, introverted, and feeling unwanted.
- By age 13, Jeanne-Marie tried to take her own life. Much to her surprise, she discovered she could fly. Excited, Jeanne-Marie thought she received a miracle and excitedly shared the tale, but was only punished for blasphemy and making up stories.
- Eventually Jeanne-Marie's psyche shattered and a new personality emerged to allow her escape from her torment. This new personality used the power of flight to get out of the school and have some fun. A few days later a disoriented Jeanne-Marie returned to the school, confused, unable to tell what happened, and wearing makeup on her face. Again she was punished, locked away in dark closet for many hours and denied a meal. From that moment on she was a model student.
- At 18 Jeanne-Marie finally graduated, having kept the wild and carefree side of her all bottled up successfully. In fact she was so impressive that Soeur Anne offered her a teaching post. Upon accepting, Jeanne-Marie was brought to a tiny room that belonged to a recently deceased priest who used to teach there. The room was little more than a cell as far as the other personality was concerned, and she forced her way to control, making her escape.
- In a short time Madame DuPont's School for Girls was left far behind, and Jeanne-Marie guided by her new personality was partying in Montreal's hottests spots, catching up on all the partying, flirting and mindless fun she missed out on while being trapped at the school. Unfortunately for her she was unaware of how dangerous it could be in certain areas of the city late at night for a young, good looking girl, and was assaulted by two men who thought to have their way with her. Fending for herself, Jeanne-Marie threw fists that were literally fast as lightning. Before she realized it she had the men knocked down.
- What Jeanne-Marie did not know was that during her partying, a government agent codenamed Wolverine had been following her and saw her unleash swift justice on the thugs, he introduced himself and invited her to join as a founding member to Alpha Flight, Canada's first official team of super-powered operatives to be based in Department H.
- While taking tests at Department H, Heather and James Hudson found how uncanny is Jeanne-Marie's similarity to Olympic gold medalist Jean-Paul Martin, and eventually found out about his adoption and relation to Jeanne-Marie. It was Alpha Flight that united the twins, giving them the codenames Aurora and Northstar. When they first shook hands, the twins also discovered their power to generate immense blinding light when in physical contact with one another.
- Jeanne-Marie's wild and fun loving personality came to take Aurora for her own name, refusing to acknowledge Jeanne-Marie as anything but an entirely different person. As far as Alpha Flight are concerned, Aurora was the only personality they ever knew, so nobody suspected her mental condition.
- Alpha Flight's first mission proved to be hunting of a former member, Wolverine, who has defected and joined the X-Men. Despite an initial success, Department H decided to give up on Wolverine an let him go his own way, and in finding the damage from the team's battles to be too high, eventually Alpha Flight was dissolved with team members sent their own ways.
- The experience was harsh on Aurora who soon lost control to the Jeanne-Marie personality. Returning to Madame DuPont's School for Girls, Jeanne-Marie resumed the teaching position she left behind. Jean-Paul eventually came to visit his sister, and was shocked to find Jeanne-Marie after all the time he has spent with Aurora. He managed to force her to acknowledge her good looks in the mirror quite harshly, and eventually made Aurora turn dominant again. He then took her to see Heather and James Hudson who decided to keep running Alpha Flight even without the government's backing.
- During her time with Alpha Flight, Aurora developed a romantic relationship with Walter Langkowski — Sasquatch — and it brought about some complications when after one mission Aurora was trapped and switched under duress back to Jeanne-Marie, who happened to despise Walter and didn't want anything to do with Alpha Flight. Jean-Paul tried to take his sister to a psychiatrist, but as nothing happened during the session, her condition again went undetected as the psychiatrist suggested it was Jean-Paul himself who had issues with accepting his sister for who she is. Jean-Paul was warned however that an attempt to cure a split personality more often than not results in creating new personalities.
- After the visit to the psychiatrist a purse snatcher attacked Jeanne-Marie, which caused her to shift into her Aurora personality once again, and she soon apprehended him. Jean-Paul proceeded to take Aurora to see his friend Raymonde Belmonde and his daughter Danielle. At the time a villain by the name of Ernest St. Ives intended to kidnap Danielle and mistakingly kidnapped Aurora, not knowing how Danielle looked like. When Northstar tracked Aurora, he found her having a nice dinner with Ernest, it turned out that Ernest was working with Danielle against Raymonde and thus left Aurora unharmed. After defeating Ernest, Northstar conveyed to Aurora that he thought she managed to stay safe because she offered Ernest a good time, which made Aurora end their partnership and fly away in anger.
- Steadfast with her decision to part with Northstar, Aurora asked Walter to try and alter her powers so they don't synch with Northstar anymore. While Walter was reluctant, he cared for Aurora and took this opportunity to alter her DNA so she doesn't register as a mutant, so Sentinels and the like would not hunt her. The results left Aurora a bit slower than Northstar, not as resistant to wind and cold, but also gave her the ability to generate light on her own, without touching her brother. Aurora moved in with Walter, and refused to acknowledge Northstar on future missions of Alpha Flight. Eventually Aurora started to see Jeanne-Marie in mirrors, and felt her trying to regain control, which brought her to cut down her hair in a new fresh style and change her costume to a more revealing one, hoping to make Jeanne-Marie disappear.
- With her new look, Aurora seemed to further distance herself from Jeanne-Marie, and developed some hedonistic tendencies, flirting at will with complete disregard to Walter, going as far as kissing other men infront of Walter. To try and strengthen their relationship, Walter took Aurora to Tamarind Island, where he inherited a mansion that could serve as the new headquarters for Alpha Flight. Inside the mansion the two got separated and Aurora was trapped in a dark room by Gilded Lily, which turned out to pralayze her as a result of achluophobia — fear of the dark which she developed as a result of her abuse at Madame DuPont's school. Even though she could now generate light on her own Aurora still was still helpless to face Gilded Lily because of the darkness. Walter shifting into Sasquatch came to Aurora's rescue, defeating Gilded Lily, but the ordeal seemed to have reverted Aurora back into Jeanne-Marie and she wanted nothing to do with Walter, and escaped by flying.
- Unlike Aurora, Jeanne-Marie was not accustomed to flying, and in her confusion wound up flying for three days without touching ground before making her way to Quebec to see Jean-Paul, arriving at his door step in a state of self pity, fear and exhaustion. Jean-Paul decided this was his chance to make things right with his sister once more. Jean-Paul took Jeanne-Marie to a circus ran by a friend of his, Clementine D'Arbanville. It proved a bad experience as Pink Pearl infilitrated the group while plotting to assassinate the presidents of Canada and the United States during an official meeting. A fight ensued, during which Jeanne-Marie reverted once again to Aurora. Despite the victory, Aurora learned of Jean-Paul's prior connections to the terrorist separatist movement in Quebec, and once again she left him to stay with her lover, Walter Langkowski.
- Soon after Alpha Flight teamed up with the X-Men as they investiagted an oddity at Ungava Bay, where they encountered Madelyne Pryor who introduced herself as Anodyne. Turned out Anodyne had incredible healing abilities and in a flash she cured Sasquatch of his bestial rages, and integrated Aurora's different personalities into a one unified personality. Eventually it was revealed this was a ploy by Loki to remove magic from the world in return to the gift he was offering. The X-Men and Alpha Flight combined to defeat him, but that caused Aurora to once again suffer from her multiple personality disorder. With Walter once again suffering bestial rages, Snowbird discovered it was a result of possession by the Great Beast Tanaraq and she killed him.
- Aurora was furious with Snowbird for killing her lover but learned there's a way to save him by traveling to the Realm of the Great Beasts. Once there, a ritual needed to take place by three people to symbolize "power", "love" and "hate." Talisman was chosen for "power," Aurora was chosen for "love," and then proceeded to select Northstar for "hate" showing her grudge with him. In the process Walter was brought back to life, but had to be housed in a temporary body, which turned out to be Box, Roger Bochs' metallic armor.
- It soon became apparent that Aurora cannot be with a man in a robotic body, as her personality turned much more hedonistic, she expected to be satisfied and a robot could not do that. Roger Bochs volunteered to help, as they tried to find an organic body for Walter, and they eventually pulled a strong body from another dimension which turned out to be The Hulk. Not wanting to harm his friend, Walter simply fizzled away, losing himself between dimensions. During the fight with an angry Hulk, the twins now found that after the changes Walter made to Aurora, when they hold hands, their powers negate. Alpha Flight did manage to push the Hulk back towards the USA eventually.
- Thinking Walter dead for good, Aurora mourned him, and in that time found that Northstar actually cared and that brought the twins closer together again. The grief also seemed to settle Aurora, not experiencing any switches to Jeanne-Marie personality, and also toning down her happy-go-lucky attitude. It turned out to be a third personality, exhibiting the cold, harsh demeanor of Jeanne-Marie combined with Aurora's flirtatious and irresponsible nature. This made her a professional heartbreaker of men, playing with their emotions, leading them on, but never quite loving them in return.
- With the loss of Walter, Aurora started seducing Roger Bochs, but after one of the battles Roger Bochs got stuck inside Box, and just as with Walter, Aurora informed him she will not be with him if he cannot satisfy her. Unlike Walter, Roger got crazy with anger and attacked Aurora, before Alpha Flight saved her. On their next mission, Alpha Flight entered burial mines near Burial Butte and Aurora fended from her fear of the dark by lighting the way. However, she soon accidentally touched Northstar and her powers were negated. Suddenly engulfed in darkness, Aurora switched into an entirely new personality, the very frightened child she was while locked in darkness at Madame DuPont's, she kept praying and begging for forgiveness until her powers returned, and the Aurora personality came back to the fore. With light restored, Aurora saw Madison Jeffries eliminating some monsters that were about to attack them, and yearning for a man, she tried to make a pass at him, only to learn that Jeffries — Roger Bochs' best friend — had no love for her after how she hurt his friend.
- Upon their return from the mission, the team found a restored Roger Bochs, cured of his paraplegia and looking better than ever as a result of Dr. Lionel Jeffries' work. Aurora once again proved how entirely concerned with herself she is when she immediately jumped in Roger's arms, relishing his new and improved body. That very night Walter returned, inhabiting an albino sasquatch body — the recently deceased Snowbird. In an instant Aurora leapt in his arms, only to find that when he reverted to his human form, he was now just as Snowbird was, a woman. Aurora tried to get Lionel Jeffries to turn Walter back to a man, but as the body belonged to a demi-goddess, Lionel Jeffries' powers had no effect. Walter started to call himself Wanda as he had to adjust to his new body, while Aurora showing just how cruel she was, told him she will never allow him to touch her again. Roger Bochs tried to use that as a chance to get Aurora back, but upon realizing how she is constantly playing with men, he decided to kill her. Once again, Aurora was saved by Alpha Flight, with Madison Jeffries forcing Roger out of the body of Box.
- In attempts to assist Roger Bochs, the team partook on an endeavor that saw to the death of both Lionel Jeffries and Roger Bochs, with all of the hate Roger felt towards her before his death, Aurora reverted again to her frightened childish personality, while Northstar's health all of a sudden became ill with a strange infection. In an attempt to help the Beaubier twins, Alpha Flight took them to the fire-fountain in a magical Viking village. In there the team separated, and Aurora stayed with her ailing brother. Loki revealed himself to the twins and informed them that they are half-elves, born to a human father and an elf mother. Claiming their parents died in a car accident caused by the elves who hunted their mother down for abandoning her people. Due to their powers of light and their pointy ears, the twins believed Loki. He claimed their pure elf bloods cannot handle the impure Earth, and only a return to Alfheim will cure them. Instead of Alfheim, however, with Loki's guidance the twins got to a netherworld full of demons. Aurora used all of her light power to restore Northstar to perfect health, but wound up losing all her powers as a result.
- While Northstar was safe and rejoined with Alpha Flight, Aurora along with Puck wound up taken by demons. The higher gods, however, were on to Loki and demanded an explanation. Loki claimed it was all in good intention, and as a show of his honesty, he transported Puck to Tibet, and the powerless Aurora to a monastery, where she was left amnesiac, but for once with a single personality.
- Finally free from shifting personalities, super powered battles, heroes or villains, Jeanne-Marie found peace and joined the convent as a nun. Memories of her time in Alpha Flight only surfaced when she heard on the news how there was a hearing about the Langkowski fortune, with the woman Wanda claiming to be a reborn Walter Langkowski. Feeling sympathy for her once lover, Jeanne-Marie traveled to meet with Wanda to comfort her. The nuns eventually learned of Jeanne-Marie's past connection to Alpha Flight as Aurora and asked her to leave the convent. Before that could happen, however, Jeanne-Marie was whisked away by Talisman to Asgard, where Northstar has learned that Loki was lying about their heritage. During a series of battles with demons in Asgard, Northstar tried to give some of his light back to Jeanne-Marie as she did for him, and it restored her powers, and once again by physical touch they had the ability to generate the immensely blinding light as before, which helped Alpha Flight to victory.
- It turned out that over the period of time where Jeanne-Marie's powers were dormant, they also evolved, and with her powers restored she was now capable to still generate light on her own, and manifest it as healing light, hypnotizing light, empathic light and concussive energy. With her former split personality condition cured, Jeanne-Marie used her powers for healing and calming affect more often than not, refusing violence unless it was absolutely necessary.
- Not long after the Fantastic Four asked Alpha Flight to join them to investigate strange energy out of the Yukon region. They come by a town under the control of the villain Headlok, who proceeded to take control over the heroes minds. He had some difficulty with Jeanne-Marie as she used her healing light on him, but eventually she too fell under his control. It was the Human Torch that managed to get Jeanne-Marie to use her healing light on herself that released Headlok's control of them, leading to his capture.
- Folllowing that experience, Jeanne-Marie resigned from Alpha Flight and joined Gamma Flight to work with the psychiatric counseling unit of Department H's incarcerated prisoners, using her healing powers. Unfortunately, during her work she was lured by Headlok into his cell, his power-dampeners malfunctioning, and began torturing her, keeping her hidden for weeks. Headlok shattered Jeanne-Marie's psyche anew, specifically to the following personalities: suicidal teenager, happy-go-lucky, heart-breaker, nun and healer. He used her different personalities as toys for his entertainment, further tormenting Jeanne-Marie, playing the role of Soeur Anne at Madame DuPont's School, punishing her teenaged self over and over again. What Headlok failed to realize, is that Jeanne-Marie's condition was born out of abuse and suffering as a means to resolve it, and that is precisely what happened when suddenly a stern and cold Jeanne-Marie personality surfaced and showered Headlok with her healing light from within, destroying him entirely.
- A medical analysis of Jeanne-Marie after the incident showed she was back to her original state with the Jeanne-Marie and Aurora personalities, only now both personalities could readily wield her powers. The only difference was in how each personality used the light powers. Aurora used the lights to affect people or to illuminate areas, whereas Jeanne-Marie used it in the manner of concussive blasts. Now Jeanne-Marie and Aurora came to agreement to join Alpha Flight once again, Jeanne-Marie no longer shunning Alpha Flight and superhero work.
Pious - Jeanne-Marie has been raised in Madame DuPont's School for Girls, a school that seemed to have been drawn out of an older century. The nuns at the school preached the Catholic religion and the girls were punished heavily for misbehaving or exhibiting sinful thoughts. Jeanne-Marie's great suffering at Madame DuPont's School eventually created the Aurora personality, it also wound up making Jeanne-Marie a truly pious person. She believes in god as a Catholic, and truly believes that those who do not abide by what the bible teaches will burn in hell. While some people will find her unbearable, there are also those who would respect her for being a true Catholic. There are after all some good sides to the religion, such as caring for those less fortunate, helping your neighbors, doing what you can to make the world a better place.
Religious - Jeanne-Marie cares little for fun and entertainment; she believes this world is meant for suffering and purification and that it is in the next world that the truly blessed are rewarded admittance to heaven, bestowed with eternal joy at the god's side. After recovering from her ordeal with Headlok, she at least now sees the use of Alpha Flight in serving like angels to protect the meek, which is why she accepted the shift from teaching or doing god's work as a nun, into serving as a member of Alpha Flight, she finally was able to see the higher calling in protecting the innocents.
Stern - Jeanne-Marie grew up in a very abusive and strict environment, and as a result she came to be quite stern and strict herself as she took on teaching as a staff member in Madame DuPont's School for Girls. As a teacher she had no qualms about punishing her students, but she seems to have kept the drive to educate people and help them better themselves even after leaving her teaching position. She is not beyond lecturing other adults if she thinks they are misbehaving, always looking to help lost souls. This characteristic doesn't make Jeanne-Marie very popular, but she is not looking to make friends of poor quality, she is only interested in making frends with people who believe in god and understand the value of living a life of virtue.
Chaste - As a result of her upbringing in Madame DuPont's School, Jeanne-Marie is a chaste woman. She will never dream of defiling herself, and would not even consider looking at a man who is not decently dressed. She believes that sexual intercourse should only take place after marriage and that any woman who allows herself sexual intercourse outside of marriage is a harlot. Naturally, Jeanne-Marie also dresses in a chaste manner, and expects the same of her others. Jeanne-Marie would have no qualms about criticizing people she considers are immoral and wanton.
Introverted - A shy person, Jeanne-Marie usually keeps to herself, she finds it hard to approach others and doesn't have much of a social life. Sure, she enjoys educating others on why they should believe in god and follow the bible's teachings, but anything beyond that and she becomes uncomfortable. If Jeanne-Marie was ever forced to attend a party, she'd likely find a nice corner to try and hide in while everyone else was having fun.
Flirtatious - Whereas Jeanne-Marie is a chaste person, Aurora is the exact opposite, carefree and bold. While some may not like Jeanne-Marie for how cold she can be, others may not like Aurora for how shameless she can be. Aurora will openly flirt with any guy she fancies and happens to lay her eyes upon simply because she can, Aurora cares very little if she might insult or hurt someone, she flirts in order to have fun. Aurora had already openly kissed a stranger in front of her once boyfriend, Walter Langkowski, because she thought it was fun. For that reason Aurora might not be the best girlfriend material out there, considering she believes more in having fun than in being faithful. Another stark difference is that while Jeanne-Marie will dress in a chaste manner, Aurora will dress wantonly as much as she can, because one never knows where they might happen by a cool looking club, or the chance to join a party.
Playful - Aurora doesn't tend to take things seriously, to her life is a game that should be enjoyed rather than just a boring gate to the next life. Aurora will make any given moment into a game if she can only think of a way to do it. Naturally, at times her playfulness borders mischievousness, and at times people might be insulted or offended by her. Still, Aurora couldn't care any less, she's out there to enjoy life and nothing will ever stop her. She's not sensible like Jeanne-Marie, but neither is she bland like Jeanne-Marie. If someone is looking for seriousness, they'd best hope Jeanne-Marie is the dominant personality.
Extroverted - Aurora is one of the most outgoing people you could possibly happen across, she'll easily start a conversation with a total stranger and set out after something that would take her interest with little regards to others already involved in conversation or presentation. She really is quite carefree and shameless; she likes meeting new people, and likes to have fun. Most of all she likes to party and a good way to learn about where parties take place is to get to know more people, so there's a chance to be invited to more parties. If she can have her way, she'll usually make sure to be at the center of attention, if she isn't already the center of attention.
Bad Role Model - Unlike Jeanne-Marie who takes the topic of educating children about leading a good life with moral values very seriously, Aurora believes in letting children be children and have as much fun as they can, after all childhood memories are precious and can never be replaced. Aurora thinks back on her own unhappy childhood at Madame DuPont's school and thinks of it as a crime, and how she'd like to make sure no other child ever experiences something similar. This may not make her the best companion for kids attending school, as no doubt she'd make light of their homework and explain to them how they better enjoy themselves as much as they can. She does her job as a member of Alpha Flight, but isn't a role model like Heather Hudson.
Alternate - As her multiple personality disorder renders Jeanne-Marie's entire identity rather unstable at any given moment, depending on the situation and what she's facing, she has been known to revert into new personalities that are not as consistent as her Jeanne-Marie and Aurora personalities. At times she has shifted into a child-like personality that seemed to timidly cower away from any adversary or danger, praying and pleading for help. She has also shifted into a stern personality who refused to be ignored and made sure to unleash justice on all evil doers. She has at one time shifted into a pacifictic personality who solely focused on healing, comforting, and aiding others and avoided violence at all costs.
The very first time Jeanne-Marie discovered her powers it was flight and speed that she discovered first, from the very initial use, she was flying at about mach 2. Ever since that day she discovered her gift, which Jeanne-Marie insisted was a miracle, she was unable to duplicate it. Aurora on the other hand has been soaring frequently, with increasing speed and maneuverability. Relishing the freedom the skies gave her from the clastrophobic school, she quickly became quite the aerobatic flyer, ever trying new stunts and maneuvers to test her capabilities. While Aurora's potential taps out at about 99 of the speed of light, a potential she may never attain with the dangers that lay at attempting such speeds within the boundaries of the Earth's atmosphere, she keeps very comfortably at mach 10 as her high end, though it isn't always necessary for her to go that fast as she generally keeps between machs 3 to 5 in her flights of frolic. The real high end of her speed is reserved for evading danger, or objectives that require immediate attention. A cavet to going faster than mach 10 for Aurora is that she starts having difficulties breathing, so while she can easily exceed mach 10, the faster she goes past mach 10 the harder it is for her to breathe, and eventually she is forced to hold her breath and is forced to slow down to prevent from choking.
Just like her twin brother, Jeanne-Marie manipulates the random atomic motion within her molecules to propel herself into phenomenal speeds. Like Jean-Paul, she is one of the fastest beings on Earth that does not tap into the Speed Force, her power holding vast potential, drawing a limit close to 99 percent of the speed of light under the right circumstances.Jeanne-Marie can achieve speeds of 770mph when running at top speeds. The best use for these bursts of top speeds are when Jeanne-Marie is delivering fists and kicks, making each one far more formidable than it ever would be without using her powers (as described in power Momentum), since after all she's not the best of fighters. Running at such speeds, Jeanne-Marie can run across a body of water, up buildings, but bearing the risk that taking a blow from someone who might be quick enough to spot her will be felt ten fold. Another key point is that Jeanne-Marie is not only able to move at these speeds, she is also able to react as if she was walking normally, so that comes very useful if for instance a building was on fire, because she'd be able to run in and get everyone outside in miniscule time. An unrelated effect of Jeanne-Marie moving at her higher end of speed is that she could appear to be invisible, as the human eye would fail to register her movement. Once she slows down or stands still again, she is once more easily visible, particularly with the glowing aura she has from using her powers.
This power can only be used when Jeanne-Marie and her twin brother Jean-Paul form any kind of physical contact, such as the first time they discovered it when they shook hands, much to the blinding pain of everyone else present. Whether the result is due to the twins doubling up their respective power due to their DNA is for the likes of Mr. Sinister to determine, what matters is that the power exists and takes place whenever they come in physical contact. Upon touching one another, the twins generate a godly blinding light, akin to looking straight at the sun with binoculars or telescope that has no solar filters. Anyone who uses vision and is not expecting the sudden flash of blinding light will probably be affected with disorientation, temporary blindness, and all the way to severe pain and at extremes even fainting. The only ones who are immune to this affect are the twins themselves, but that is likely a result that they are essentially the source of that blinding light and their powers keep them safe from the affect. A serious down side is that they do need to be in contact with one another, so if attentive villains managed to separate the twins, this particular power would be eliminated from the equation.
Aurora can fly at incredible speeds, which exposes her to powerful friction, air turbulence, and G-Force. Luckily, as part of her mutation her body is equipped to deal with all these forces she's expected to encounter while reaching her higher end speeds. As a result of her power working through control of the motions of her molecules, Aurora in-effect increases the binding forces between them and gains a physical sturdiness akin to that of a diamond. This protection from such powerful forces also renders Aurora very difficult to harm with physical blows. She can be knocked by a powerful physical blow that manages to hit her, but the damage will be well resisted by her body. The wider the area of the damage, the easier it is for her body to resist all forces that follow from a physical blow. However, the smaller the area, the more likely it is to hurt Aurora. Piercing attacks, for instance, are small enough in area of effect that this power will not protect her, and she will easily be injured just like any other person. Another side effect from this power is that Aurora has superhuman stamina to help her withstand all the forces her own powers generate, supporting the stain on the phasing molecules across her body. She can fly for hours at moderate speeds, and can recover from exhaustion in a fraction of the time it would take a normal human—also aided by the faster healing mentioned in Accelerated Metabolism power. An oddity as a result of this power, is that when Aurora moves in high speeds she can manage to breathe in altitudes with thin air and sustain herself while moving as fast as mach 10, beyond that she starts to experience difficulties in breathing. This means she can fly in areas with thin air without ill effect, although if she is carrying another person she will have to go considerably slower and lower, so as not to hurt them in environments with thin air. One final benefit Aurora enjoys from this power is the ability to withstand temperatures that would be very uncomfortable for regular humans, she can be in the North Pole without a coat and feel a slight chill, as well as easily handle temperatures of about 100 C.
When Aurora uses her powers, her body generates photons which make her glow as well as emit heat. There are many application to her power of controlling light, chief amongst them is the Flashbang, a devstating effect that results from Aurora holding physical contact with her twin brother, Northstar. With the light she can produce on her own, Aurora can create sparks of light that may startle others, especially if she creates them close to their faces. She can also with greater concentration create concussive beams of light, and shoot them at enemies, its like being hit with a blunt object thrown with speed. The most effective use of her photokinesis ability, however, is the generation of a strobe light effect in an area as large as a room, causing trouble for people with sensitive vision and potentially triggering seizures in those who suffer from epilepsy. The main use of the strobe light generation is to blur the perception of her enemies, as it interferes with their perception, and that coupled with her great speed is a great advantage. Jeanne-Marie favors the concussive blast form of light emission, while Aurora prefers to merely create light, whether the strobe effect to disrupt perception of enemies, illumination to ward off darkness, or a somewhat hypnotic application that attunes the light to either help calm down aggressive people, or make Aurora's words seem more favorable. The trick is the frequency of the light that can be used to soothe like an hypnotic wave, and lull a person into calmness. This will nevertheless never fully work on rage affected people such as Wolverine or the Hulk, it could tone their anger down, but super crazy angry and just super angry is not a big difference.
Aurora's mutation has rendered her entire physiology different than a normal human's, as is the case with some mutants. The chief advantage she has is her accelerated metabolism, which also benefits her with a faster than normal healing. It is by no means a healing factor, but she tends to heal in half the time it takes a normal human to recover from different ailments and injuries. This is also the reason why Aurora can recover rather fast after reaching a state of full exhuastion. She tends to generally enjoy superb health as a result of this power, and can outlast some serious alcohol drinkers in drinking contests, as its usually handled by her accelerated metabolism. Though even she has her limits, albeit staggernig ones. Coincidentally, it happens to fit very well with Aurora's life style of excessive partying and hedonism.
When Aurora flies or runs fast she gains momentum, through that she can perform feats of superhuman strength despite not having that power. The key to this use of her powers is that she'll be able to move and pick up momentum. It is this very power that saved Aurora the first time she got in trouble while partying recklessly in Montreal, at the time she had no fighting skills whatsoever, but managed to hit the thugs who attacked her with one hundred punches in less than a second, the momentum of the punches making each one feel much harder than a look at her might suggest she's capable of throwing. Ramming at a target at top speed would feel as if it was the Incredible Hulk, rather than Aurora, who just hit the target. All of this, however, is still very highly dependent on her ability to pick up momentum. She needs enough room to generate momentum to perform feats of super strength. If she has no room to move at all, Aurora can still hurt someone a great deal with even a full extension of her arm into a fist—from a relatively short range and a fully extended fist she could puncture a hole through a steel wall at roughly 100 tons of force.
Jeanne-Marie is not only fast with the speed she goes, but she's also fast in her reaction speed, featuring heightened agility and reflexes. She is able to stop and turn on a dime, not suffering the affect of physical forces because of her powers, but in order for that to work she has to be in motion. It's hard for her to get into such precise and timely reactions from a stand still condition. Much like her brother, she could move faster than bullets and pluck them out of thin air, as well as dodge laser fire by moving faster and outmaneuvering it. This again, also makes her glow just as any other application of her powers does.
Aurora is a free spirit, and unlike Jeanne-Marie who can is used to confinement, she must be free at all costs. That is why out of all of Aurora's powers, she enjoys flight the most. Soaring the air, testing top speeds, pushing ever faster and trying impressive aerial maneuvers is the very definition of freedom for Aurora. In spending so much time in the air, she has become quite accomplished in gaining the expertise required to pull aerobatic maneuvers, getting in spaces where it doesn't quite seem possible and performing evasive maneuvers on a dime. She loves showing off, and she loves the carefree experience of flying.
While Jeanne-Marie is introverted, timid and shys away from attention, Aurora is absolutely outgoing, charming and playfully adores engaging in flirtation as a pastime activity. Aurora loves to be the center of attention, but more than that, she loves to be the center of attention of guys. She always feels better to have guys vying for her, but isn't always kind to those who do. She is self-centered, and her charming flirtatious nature is a combination of her extroverted personality along with her egotistic desire to be loved and appreciated. If she sets her mind to it, she could likely win the attention of any guy she desired, but for the most part she likes guys who are unique in one way or other.
While Jeanne-Marie certainly suffered in Madame DuPont's School for Girls, she also got some very good education while there, even if it was deeply focused on giving a Catholic perspective to everything. She measures rather well with people who went to secular or private schools, and can easily be considered an educated person. The focus of her studies was religion and that has been drummed into her mind from a young age. It's not a question whether she believed it or not, corporal punishment was used to enforce the faith of any rebellious girl. Needless to say, by the time she graduated, Jeanne-Marie had become a very firm believer in the Catholic religion, but she also learned of other religions. Jeanne-Marie is very comfortable holding conversations about religion and the importance of following what the bible teaches. It is probably the one area of conversation where Jeanne-Marie has any trace of confidence.
Jeanne-Marie, having spent her entire life in the French speaking Quebec province of Canada, is first and foremost a native French speaker, fluent and comfortable in the language. She has learned English as part of her studies at Madame DuPont's School, but she is not comfortable with the language, and has a distinct French-Canadian accent when she speaks. Aurora on the other hand, while every bit as capable in French, tends to keep strictly to English if she can manage, and hasn't a trace of accent in her words, almost as if willing herself to perfect English to distance herself from Jeanne-Marie.
As a member of Alpha Flight, Jeanne-Marie received extensive training in hand-to-hand combat from the likes fo Wolverine and Puck. While she's not going to destroy a clan of ninjas anytime soon, she can hold her own in a fight unless she happens across practitioners with superior experience and training.
Having spent years using her powers both for frolicing and for crime fighting as a member of Alpha Flight, Aurora has gained a certain finesse with her abilities. She can speed read, she can run in circles to create cyclones, take sharp turns at super speeds to create wind shears, run up walls as well as across water.
Jeanne-Marie has spent a few years teaching in Madame DuPont's School for Girls when she managed to have aprolonged control as the dominant personality, as a result she's gotten quite good, and if necessary could probably get across to a class if she ever sought to continue a teaching career. For now, however, she is content with Alpha Flight.
As a professional party girl, and partaker of fun extraordinare, Aurora is very much in her element when she's at a club partying, through the many times spent just dancing, flirting and having a good time she's become a rather proficient dancer. She won't be going to dancing competitions anytime soon, but she can impress with her moves on the dance floor.
DEPARTMENT H: Department H in Toronto, Canada, serves the the headquarters of Alpha Flight. It is an ultra modern building that rises 50 floors above ground and extends 35 floors underground. In the secret underground floors, Alpha Flight have their living quarters and training facilities, featuring their version of the X-Men's Danger Room, called Combat Centrale.
UNIFORM: Aurora's uniform were designed and given to her by the resources available to Department H which runs Alpha Flight. It is a special high-tech suit that can withstand the incredible speeds Aurora can reach, as well as the heat and friction that come as a result. A special feature added at Aurora's request is that all white sections on her uniform are luminescent. While Aurora's reasoning is that it looks awesome, the actual reason is to have some bit of safety to cling to if she happened into dark places due to her fear of the dark.
ALPHA FLIGHT: While not always popular with everyone in Alpha Flight, Aurora has been one of the first members on the team, and most other members sympathized with her mental condition after they learned about it. She has been rescued several times from certain death by Alpha Flight, and if she ever got in over her head, it is certain Alpha Flight will at least make an attempt to save her.
NORTHSTAR: While the Beaubier twins have their share of hot and cold cycles in their relationships, to the extent that they wouldn't be out of place on any soap opera, they still ultimately care for one another as the only family they have in the world. No matter how angry Aurora may be at Northstar, and no matter what she says, if he was in danger of losing his life she would help, as evident by her sacrificing her powers to save him in Asgard. The opposite is also true, and no matter how angry Aurora has gotten at Northstar and how cold she has been towards him, he always seem to love her and care for her, to the extent of sometimes showing jealousy towards her lovers simply for having her attention.
SASQUATCH: While Aurora has since broken off her relationship with Walter Langkowski, he never seemed to have lost his love for her. If any were to harm Aurora within earshot of Sasquatch, they can expect a world of pain coming their way.
CONTACTS: During her time with Alpha Flight, Aurora had the chance to work with the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, while the teams very rarely cooperate on missions, she still has the mean to contact them should the need arise, and they likely know who she is and recognize Alpha Flight as the primary superhero authority in Canada.
UNDETECTABLE MUTANT: Due to a result of a set of operations Walter Langkowski ran on Aurora, she now does not register as a mutant on scanners specifically meant for such. Thus Sentinel robots may not actively hunt and attack her, and she could enter complexes that are especially set to screen mutants.
UNIQUE LOOK: While Jeanne-Marie may not necessarily consider it a blessing, Aurora is very pleased with her good looks, while not everyone may find her attractive, the pointy ears, intense blue eyes, and the silver streaks in her black hair make for a very unique and somewhat elfin look. In the past Loki actually made the Beaubier twins believe they were light elves from Alfheim and nobody else seemed to doubt it. The fact she also has a very good physique as a result of her accelerated metabolism and Alpha Flight training only helps enhance her good looks. Jeanne-Marie may try to cover up with modest outfits, but Aurora basks in her good looks and loves to show off.
TELEPATHIC RESISTANCE: While not a power per se, Aurora is a very sophisticated Chinese puzzle to a telepath. It's not that she is able or trained to deal with telepaths, but her cracked psyche and multiple personalities are ever changing at the chance to attain control of the body. While this quality does nothing to aid Aurora against telepathic attacks such as psi-bolts, it guards her very well against attempts to manipulate her or her memories. At first all would seem well, just like attempting to manipulate any other person, but as soon as success seems at hand, everything will suddenly change as the mind becomes unfamiliar, and it seems the telepath is linking to an entirely different person. A truly world class telepath, with enough experience and great control of his or her power, may detect the MPD condition and bring one personality or another to the fore. Such a telepath may decide to try and operate on both personalities simultaneously, but then an entirely new personality would emerge. Meticulous work, not overly invasive could yield some successful results even if temporary ones, so long as the telepath is of superb skill and works at Aurora's mind like a fine surgeon.
FAITH: At times of distress, when all hope is gone, someone with a strong faith like Jeanne-Marie somehow finds a way to believe that everything will be resolved for the better. Jeanne-Marie truly believes in the heavenly father, she believes in the bible, and so she knows she is always protected if she continues to pray and uphold the bible. This makes Jeanne-Marie tough to break down, even if she is timid and introverted. This holds only for Jeanne-Marie and has nothing to do with Aurora.
As a result of using her powers, Aurora generates photons that make her glow brightly. The more of her powers she uses, the faster she moves, the brighter she shines. In a dark environment this would make Aurora stand out immediately, and even while not in darkness, she tends to glow so brightly, that avoiding being noticed is out of the question for her. With her glowing aura, she also generates heat, which could make it uncomfortable for someone she is carrying if she is uncareful and goes fast enough to generate levels of heat that another may suffer from. It is also notable that beyond a certain speed, if she were to wear normal clothes rather than a specialized costume, they would simply tear apart and burn away.
The most notable fact about Jeanne-Marie is the multiple personality disorder she developed while suffering abuse at Madame DuPont's School for Girls. While it may not be apparent to one who only hangs around her for a short time, when one has a chance to be with her for a prolonged time, her condition sooner or later reveals itself. At any moment Jeanne-Marie can become Aurora, and vice versa. In more severe cases, should a telepath really try to manipulate her for instance, an entirely new personality can emerge. This will only happen under the most trialing duress, when neither Aurora nor Jeanne-Marie can offer proper escape or solution to the problem, it is in the nature of her broken psyche. Each personality considers herself an entirely different person from the other personality, it's as though they don't realize they share the same body and mind. One moment Aurora could be flirting with someone at a club, and a moment later Jeanne-Marie could slap the very same person because he is sexually harassing her. Usually when the dominant personality shifts, it's as if she just regained consciousness after fainting and has no clear awareness of what took place while she was out. This may lead to some unpleasant situation, and may bring people to determine that Jeanne-Marie is simply nuts.
While it may seem strange for the light aura Aurora creates when she uses her powers, as well as her luminescent costume if she happens to be wearing it, Aurora suffers from achluophobiafear of the darkand one could easily bring her to her knees by surrounding her in darkness. She can try and calm herself with the glowing aura she generates when using her powers, she can try and use her photokinesis powers, but the more she is surrounded in darkness, the more likely Aurora is to give way to the Jeanne-Marie personality, more often then note she tends to be paralyzed with fear when faced in complete darkness. Someone with powers such as Darkstar, or someone clever enough to lead Aurora into getting trapped in a dark room could easily best her.
Due to the light-based rather than Speed Force based nature of Aurora's powers, her potential lays about 99 of the speed of light. However, she is limited from reaching her potential in that going that fast will damage not only herself, but also her surrounding environmen under Earth's atmospheret. Perhaps in space, Aurora may be able to use her power to its fullest potential some day, but on Earth she is limited to a much slower speed.
While Jeanne-Marie who is timid, humble and quiet, Aurora is proud, loud and boastful. So it is only natural that Aurora is very sincerely devoted to her own person. While she likes to frolic, flirt, and pursuit hedonistic pleasure, anything and everything Aurora does is centered around her own happiness. She cares very little for others and can be very cruel. If she were to date someone because of his extremely good looks, she will just as easily leave that person were he to lose his good looks. She can be that shallow. This attitude may not win her too many friends, once they see how egotistical she is.
Some people tend to feel like they hate themselves, whether for past decisions they regret, things they have done they are ashamed of or any other reason. In Jeanne-Marie's case, she truly does hate herself. More precisely, Jeanne-Marie thinks Aurora is someone the devil made to torment her, and Aurora thinks Jeanne-Marie is some ice witch that only exists to ruin her relationships and pull pranks on her that make her snap out of slumbers wearing the worst clothes imaginable. So while it is essentially Jeanne-Marie and Aurora that hate one another, considering they are the same person, it is a much deeper level of self loathing.

- Aurora assisted Spider-Man in the rescue of civilians from a crashing helicopter
- Aurora went for a visit at the X-Mansion, and met Havok at poolside, she setup something of a date with him
- Aurora encounters Ares and his demonic shadowy beasts which trigger a shift into Jeanne-Marie
- Jeanne-Marie assists Havok as he battles Sabretooth, and is quite perplexed when he accuses her of standing him up
- Following the fight with Sabretooth, Jeanne-Marie gets a call from Alpha Flight to get back to Canada, with Havok tagging along, they soon find Selene who warns them about Belasco.
- Unsure whether Selene or Belasco is the problem Jeanne-Marie knew she had to enlist the help of a magic user, she flew to the X-Mansion to see if she can find help there, she ran into Dr. Nemesis who proceeded to insult her a good deal, making her nurture a good deal of dislike towards him.
- Jeanne-Marie proceeded to set a meeting with Cyclops, an X-Men Team Leader, to complaint about Dr. Nemesis' rudeness and bad conduct. She left disappointed, and of the opinion that Xavier's School for The Gifted is a horrible school that teaches children bad manners and morals.
- Having heard about the Mutant Massacre, specifically the events at the Massachusetts Academy, Jeanne-Marie decided to take action one way or another. She specifically despises the hateful words Stryker spouts in the name of god.
- Jeanne-Marie encountered Sandman for the first time, coming to the Human Torch's aid, although she's still uncleared about what she witnessed during the incident and what are the names that were uttered. From her limited understanding, Sandman seems to be controlled by something else.
- Following an encounter with Empath and a follow up encounter with both Empath and Selene, Jeanne-Marie's mind has once again been played with, as Selene tried to lock away both her predominant personalities, and fabricate a third one based on Aurora with some distinct changes, chief amongst them, unyielding love for Selene, her Goddess. Naturally, Selene is not familiar with Headlok and therefore may think her work is permanent.
- Under Selene's control, Aurora has come under attack by Shinobi Shaw like the rest of the Hellfire Club, getting poisoned to be taken out of one encounter, and protecting Selene in another. For now she truly wishes Shinobi Shaw dead.
- In another attack by Shinobi Shaw and his wouldbe new Inner Circle, one of Shinobi's accomplices projected an illusion that made Aurora see Sebastian Shaw as one of the priests who tormented her in Madame DuPont's, which made her relapse into a regressed Jeanne-Marie persona. Hellfire Club didn't realize what was happening, and Jeanne-Marie escaped from their facilities, only to happen by Alex Summers, who took her to see Jean Grey and Professor Xavier, the two of which helped her recover into a more independent semblance of herself, with Alpha Flight being alerted to pick her up.
